Those prices are a little higher than I would of guessed they would be, so it's at least not bad news.

Only 5 grey fox but the average is still impressive. IMO

Re: MTPCA Fur Sale Results - 12/14/19 08:15 PM

I would like an interpretation of the castor results. Thanks!

(If that is $335/lb....well, it's too late to set traps today, but come Sunday morning I'll be out there!)

Those are all put up fur. Green fur would be noted.

Any chance they would ever have a sale further north?

Those are better than I expected. No fisher at the sale?

Fisher are highly restricted in MI. Only 1 per season and only in the U.P. Mandatory registration of animal also. I think most people who harvest a fisher have the hide tanned and it is kept.

The only thing I see to get excited about Is the rat price.

Obviously, you are bashing the MTPCA by this forthright statement. smile

I believe they sell castor by the “pile”. No weight to go by. Just what ever the trapper has is in one lot.

So they had at least 2 “piles” of castor. One sold for $335.00. One sold for $195.00. There could have been more “piles”, we don’t really know.

I feel I did pretty good selling to the rat wagon, higher averages and mine was green.

I agree with you Beav. It would appear from the numbers, that is the only thing sent in volume. So, my guess, is most trappers agree with you.

Re: MTPCA Fur Sale Results - 12/15/19 03:20 AM

thank you for posting the results. MI always has a nice sale and the rats seem to be doing well. There are some good rats out of that area. Pretty good sample size too. One would need to average $4.70 at FHA to net the same with an 11% commission.
Reds just don't get any traction. With a $20 top and a $9 average there are just a lot of $10 reds these days. $7.75 for put up coons. With $2-$3 suggested value for put up that means we have a $5 average on MI grease coons.
Four average Eastern coyotes are worth 20 average put up coons, or 24 male mink.

Thanks Nancy for the interpretation. When I read those #'s I almost had a "pile" in my britches!

Castor is sold by the Ounce.

There was," Put Up Fur" and," Green" hides sold.

Badgers were in the Round, along with a few other items.

The results were a quick post. I think our fur sale director will have a further break down of Sale Results.

Ottertrapper, a very sincere question? Where would another place further north, to have a sale be? I am interested in this.

I was at the sale all day.

The MTPCA thanks all that attended, worked, and participated to make this sale possible.

Re: MTPCA Fur Sale Results - 12/15/19 02:15 PM

Could you elaborate a bit more on the castor? It would be helpful to know how many ounces were in the group that sold for $335.00. It is a bit confusing on the report.

Thanks

Michigan is known for top dollar big eastern rats FYI

Re: MTPCA Fur Sale Results - 12/15/19 03:13 PM

Yeah the castor price needs some definition like per pound dry or green?

Re: MTPCA Fur Sale Results - 12/15/19 04:47 PM

^^^^^ I second the motion. (Although the post did say "dried".)

Re: MTPCA Fur Sale Results - 12/16/19 07:31 AM

I did hear that one of the piles was really wet. The other kinda ok./ If I remember correct, one pile was close to 5 pounds give or take a bit and the other if I remember correct was around 3 1/2 pounds or more. For some reason I was thinking the total was a bit over 8 pounds. Got this through a grape vine. I know I am not right on the weight but kinda close maybe. I can stand to be corrected, please.

Re: MTPCA Fur Sale Results - 12/16/19 04:25 PM

In the past fur sales up in Houghton Lake, the attendance has been low.

So for the last couple of years no-sale. Reduced down to 3 sales. Previously 5 sales across the state.

More info on castor. That was the only item on the list that caught ones attention!
