Logan’s 2019 Marten Line

Season opens next weekend for marten, fisher and cats so Logan is busy checking traps, cutting and marinating bait and getting geared up. I haven’t trapped marten in 6 or 7 years so I will have to relearn it. He is pretty excited! We scouted cats yesterday and found where a few are holed up so hopefully we can connect on a couple. The custom fully modified #3 long springs that Pat Fundine made him haven’t pinched a toe yet and that needs to change!

Marten are among the most lovely amazing fur to be caught.

Marten, wolverine and fox of all species and colour phases are at the top of my favourite list.

All three you both are after, marten, fisher and cats , is a wonderful goal.

I'm sure that old Diamond #3 long is lonely. I just happen to have a #3 Newhouse that someone has made into a really nice cat trap. It's a shame that it is just sitting around.

Hope you guys do well and have some fun while you're at it. Do you have a ton of snow up there like we do? If so have you seen many fisher and marten tracks yet?

Yes LOTS of snow! It is going to be rough on the deer. This isn’t very good marten or fisher country but he only needs one!

Looks like a decent cat track. I've never sized them with a chew can before....

I learned from a guy that has seen more cats than you can imagine.
If you can set a pop can in it - about 30 pounds, and it's a nice cat.
If you can set a 20 oz. Pop bottle in it - 40 pounds, and loose the hounds, and maybe get Jet out of the dog box.

I found one that a Crown Royale bottle sat in. How much does it weight?

Before or after the Crown Royal bottle is empty do you do the weight ?

Say if your not successful ....Got your passports ready for a little trip, for a follow along up north here?.

Found an interesting bait this year had some old rubber fingers for DP's that were 7 years old, still smelt like crayfish so I put them in 6 boxes, along with the bait and fish oil (also 7 years old)
6 other boxes were without fingers--- bingo on 6 with fingers. Now if I could only train a fisher to climb running poles.

Pat Fundine hooked him up with some tricked out ones and they go in the ground Saturday. He doesn’t know it yet but Santa hooked him up with a 1972 Yamaha Enticer that I need to go get tomorrow for running traps.

He will be styling when he snags that first bobcat!
I'm glad he has a father that doesnt park him in front of an xbox and then go do his own thing

It drives me nuts when we watches you tube rather than getting out and experiencing things himself.

I think the only reason you take him out is to test the ice conditions...was that not your crunch in the first pic and your wet pants are being hidden by the beaver wall.

Wonderful weather to trap some coons in this warm weather relief we are having.

Forecast is in the upper 30’s for a couple of days so fisher sets might accidentally produce a big puffy coon!

What a day! The snow is deep in the big woods but we got about 40 sets in. I bet the kid sleeps good tonight!






Seeing the bull moose today was cool but he didn’t cooperate for a good picture. He was licking salt off the road!

I am going to sleep like a baby! In places it was waist deep. Lots of time and effort for 2 $20 marten!

Sign was actually not what I had hoped. Fairly bleak actually but with the snow falling from the trees it was tough to see much.

I have high hopes for you two. We've only had one night so far this winter that I consider good cat nights. We are due for one in the next week. I expect any day you'll find a nice tom that found his way into a Diamond #3 long spring.

We got 40 “Hail Mary” sets in. I am certain your 1 set is quality.

Today the cages and the Diamond get put out!

You and Logan kicked some butt yesterday,40 sets .....We only got out 14 marten boxes and 4 bobcat locations set up,but we ran the coyote traps also.Good luck today,we are going to add 3 or 4 marten boxes and 3 more bobcat locations today.We'll have pic's to post later this evening.

We plugged in 11 more cat sets yesterday. The animals didn’t seem to move quite as much with the warm weather but hopefully today we can snag something.

My best advise for finding sign is to check the edges of creeks and rivers. The overflow made ice out of the snow and it only has a skiff of snow on it. Those conditions make easy travel for predators along the rivers. I think fox and coyote calling on the rivers in the evening could be real good.

good luck. just need 3 out of 40 sets. pick out the nice big ones and turn in the small incidentals . Thats what we used to do. limit of 2 is redickulas.

There is a group of us trapping together so we can still have 7 more and will tag the first 7 animals we take. If there are any extra or incidentals they will be surrendered to the CO and a call made from the kill sight. I am not trying to argue ethics but I will teach Logan the RIGHT way to do things and will not “bend” any rules!

Sure hope Logan gives a youth seminar in the summer convention of the MTA .

We are headed to the big woods now and will post pictures tonight.

Rob put some two inch spacers between Logans sled skiis and spindles. This will make the Yamaha turn easier for Logan. Good luck on line.

Holy cow Shannon! That is a haul. We pulled the marten line today ending up 1 short of our limit but DANG did we have fun! Time to try to pinch a cat now.

I found some hot cat sign today and grabbed Logan to put in some fresh sets. Hopefully these produce in the next couple of days for him.

We drew a blank yesterday but are hoping to connect today. We will start pulling stuff today and the rest tomorrow ahead of the 12-15 inches of snow they are forecasting.

Regretfully will have to pull stuff today also since after the storm anything would have to tunnel under in order to reach any of the sets.

Another blank today. I am not sure where the cats went. They were on baits heavy and just disappeared. I got greedy and left most sets out and we will pull them tomorrow in the blizzard. I hope they move tonight!

I think that you will be glad you left them as long as you get a couple hours of night before the storm hits.They allways move right after a storm here.
