We got both around here.I like it when the snowshoe hairs turn white here,,then we get a thaw. They look like Clorox jugs running through the woods.LOL I find the cotton tails much better eating.

Most of the time the cottontails are holed up in thick cover, so they just look like rocks. They do stick out when they make a break for it.

I love stalking them with a 22.

We used to hunt them on drives.
one guy armed with a .22 pistol would work thru the thick stuff in the creek bottom while 2 standers with .22 rifles would wait by the escape cover.
Some days the driver would get lots of rabbits as they would sit tight and you almost had to step on them to get them running and other days the standers would be getting all the action.

Great fun!
And good eats afterward!

Funny. About forty years ago now, I was so pee poor that my wife and I basically lived off rabbit. She was a genius of coming up with recipes; Curried rabbit. Sweet 'n sour rabbit. You name it.

But, to this day, just seeing that photo almost made me want to throw up! The thought of putting rabbit in my mouth truly disgusts me now.

Weird how I'm looking forward to tonights lamb steak. Another animal which just bites grass all day. Meat couldn't be more different though. Strange, how nature works.

Think I'll give my mind a rest now! laugh

What kind of rabbits are they, I don't think cottontails turn white.

Cottontail is my second favorite small game, right behind squirrel.

Pest's Dad, I do understand, as when i was in college in the late 60's I was paying my own way through school, and could afford very little. For Christmas one year I got 6 boxes of .410 shotgun shells, and thereafter I fixed rabbit as fried, baked, boiled, roasted, fricaseed (sp), tetrazini (sp), and rabbit salad sandwiches every day for lunch for over a year. I haven't had rabbit since then.

Lugnut, Here in the Dacks & other northern climates "white rabbits" are Snowshoe Hare . The brown bunnies are eastern cottontail . If a person can find good Hare habitat w/ population, could have a fun hunt w/ a good dog. 60's & 70's were GREAT. Days of yesteryear around me. Tut

Rabbits thrive on mess the more old junk laying around whether its tree tops or old cars or irrigation pipes laying around the more rabbits you will have .3"and4" Pipes are the best . Before my time dad managed a beagle clubs grounds they cut 50 gal barrels in half lengthwise and cut a 4" hole in the endso rabbits could get in there then about once a week or so they would dump a fruit can of corn under the half barrels

Re: Rabbit its whats for breakfast - 06/22/20 01:43 PM

Sorry to say I find it hard to kill them. I might need to get over that as they are in my garden even though I had a fence around the garden. They dive right through the 2x4 inch fence. If not them then its the deer. I planted buckwheat for my bees well it looks like a combine went thru the patch as all that is left is stems and the deer just love buckwheat. The wife loves her deer, they walk right up to with 10 feet of her as she talks to them. They see her outside they come walking, magic.

Just curious about the pine cones in the pen ?
Posted By: pintail_drake04

Re: Rabbit its whats for breakfast - 06/22/20 05:55 PM

it gives them something to do. They toss it around, and gnaw on it. It also helps keep their teeth wore down. A full sized adult rabbit (Standard Rex or NZW like I have) will chew a pine cone to a nub in 1-2 days.

I never considered pine cones , wondered about the pine pitch ?
I've used fresh cut fruit wood limbs before, your right about chewing .
They make them looked beaver peeled in a hurry.
