Your very first vehicle...

Your very first vehicle... - 12/21/19 07:12 PM

After graduating high school in 1976 I bought a 1971 Chevy pickup, 250 6 cyl., 3 speed on the column. I loved that old truck. Drove it until the Michigan road salt rusted it so bad it wasn't road worthy.
Very similar (same color) as this one I found a picture of.

Mine was a 63 1/2 Ford Galaxie. It was chestnut brown and beautiful. Had the swing away wheel and you could have a party in the trunk with a lot of invited guest lol. It looked just like this. Side note, I'm a Chevy man, there's a Ford in my driveway as I type this lol. I can't explain and have no excuse for myself. grin

Bought a used Subaru Brat in 1983 while I was in the Air Force. I beat the living tar out of that vehicle as it carried me from Denver to Michigan and finally to Alaska! I could not kill that truck and it would go places big trucks would never attempt as it was very narrow and surprisingly powerful in 4 wheel drive! Finally was totaled by a lady that turned into me in downtown Anchorage. Her insurance company cut me a check for more than I paid for the truck! laugh

Re: Your very first vehicle... - 12/21/19 08:13 PM

Mine was a 1962 Ford Falcon Club Wagon. Except for the roof top carriers, mine looked very close to this, even the rust.

I remember one time in the winter we were having a snowball fight and the door of the van was open. The ignition switch was on the dashboard right by the door. Somebody threw a snowball and it went in the van and hit right on top of the ignition switch, filing it with snow. ("Man, I'm setting here laughing about it now".) Every time I started the van that winter I had to bend down to ignition switch and blow in it, to thaw it out, so it would turn. The comments were never-ending.

In wet weather, if it set overnight, I had to hang a trouble light by the distributor, to keep the moisture out, so the thing would start.

The first couple of years that my dad, and I, went deer hunting, that is what we stayed in.

Not the first car I ever drove, but the first one I bought. '67 Scout with the slant 4 and hydraulic wipers. Bought it in Belgrade Montana in 1978 and this picture was taken by my dad when I was a fishing guide in northeastern California and cowboyed in the winters. Rust finally got the best of the Scout but it covered a lot of ground between Montana, Colorado, Kansas and California.

My dad had a 64 Mercury Comet convertible stick shift on the floor four barrel 289. He had it in highschool. It sat in the barn my whole life being swallowed by groundhog holes and buried in coon crap. He passed in 04 and I sold it in 2015 probably when I was cleaning up the farm. He sold it to go into the airforce and bought it back from the guy when he rotated back to the states.

I still have his cushman scooter though.

My first car was a 1980 mustang hatchback in 1993. 2.3L 4 cylinder. It was a light blue car with a white hatch and rust through the floor boards.

59 rambler. Guy came into the dorm griping about his car and wanting to get rid of it. I offered him $25 and he said sold. Drove it for about 6 months and then decided to rebuild the engine. As soon as it was all in pieces my buddy left for a forestry job. 45 years later I still bring up the time he walked out on me in my hour of need. Learned a valuable life lesson from that car - that there was zero chance that I would become an auto mechanic.

In the 1990's I heard some young guys talking about buying a pair of tennis shoes for $125. I shook my head and told them that was 5 times what I paid for my first car.

'79 Thunderbird that had belonged to my great uncle. He had taken really good care of it and I bought it from him for $900 in 1993. Worked all summer, saved up enough to buy it and put new tires on it.

Had all the bells and whistles that one could get in 1979. Had a 351, but was geared for the highway... An old lady with a walker could beat me off the line... But I would run out of nerve before I ran out of top end. She could pass anything but a gas station.

Thing must've had 90 feet of hood in front of it. Lol

Re: Your very first vehicle... - 12/21/19 10:38 PM

1970 Plymouth Duster, green like the truck in the first picture, bought in 1984, when I was 19

Came with a 225, but we put in a built 360 w/340 J heads, and a custom reverse pattern manual 904 transmission a couple of years later.
Lots of fun tearing it up in Brooklyn NY with that baby during the mid 1980s !!!
Bench seat too, always fun shifting with a girl sitting in the middle smile smile smile

*as a side note, I still have that drivetrain to this car, along with a 1971 Duster body - which I've owned since late 1986 after I wrecked my 70 on the BQE, but the shop I was working at in Bay Ridge [G.C. Performance] lost it's lease, so I kept the 70 going for as long as I could, till 93 where between the twisted unibody and another broken torque converted - I had enough and bought a brandy new 93 Jeep, which served me well till it had to be junked due to severe rust among other things... maybe not quite two years ago.

I keep saying I'm going to put the 71 on the road, but I'm figuring at least $25k to make that happen - probably closer to $35k... because everything needs to be done over, as my drivetrain has been sitting since 1996....

Problem is i just bought a new project car, a 2002 Monte Carlo SS that's black with the checkered flags on the sides, along with some cool options.
That one should only cost about $10k to get where I want it.

I love these threads, because the older cars - and trucks - were just so much better and easier to work on than what's made today.

Like, my 70 Duster has a mechanical dual point distributor, and a Holly carb with mechanical secondaries - so no vacuum lines !!
Brakes were manual, so was the steering... you opened up the hood, and it was a dream to work on.

My old 79 C-10 truck was/is the same way, but that's off the road - probably for good.

I envy those posting here, all of the older rides were/are so much more beautiful than what I started with !!

So a few years ago i found a 1969 chevy, slowly fixing it up. 2nd car was a 1967 chevy chevelle, was told it needed a engine cause it over heated. But a thermostat and a good used radiator and the way we went. That one was hard to keep tires on lol. It to wish i still had. I was 17 in 1964 when I bought a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria from my 2nd cousin that had 121,000 on it for $100. All the tires were bald and blew two of them driving it to the farm I lived on. Retreads were about $5 each and $1 to mount so I bought 3, two to put on the car and one for a spare. The car was in pretty rough shape but it allowed me to get around for about a year. That was the first car I owned and did not own another one until I was 25 after graduating from college and getting out of service.

Frankenstein truck. 55 chevy engine and chassis, 71 Chevy cab , some international front end,box was 3/8 sheet metal with toolboxes welded in on both sides. Some loggers built it for skidding logs and traded it to my grandfather for doing some welding we did for them. Grandpa told me if I could get it running I could have it. Straight 6 with 4 on the floor and granny low. Thing was a beast buy 45 was top speed going down hill with a back wind. I was 15 and self taught myself a Lot about working on engines. Sure wish I had still had that thing.

That sounds like a good idea! Based on all of the people I have heard talk about their first vehicle they all wish they kept it!

Mine was a 68 Jeep Wagoneer, this same color before I started in making it the ultimate cruise vessel, with a custom paint job, big tires and wheels, 8 track, you know all the cool stuff. I would get up in the middle of the night and drive all the back alleys when we had a big snow storm just to find deep fresh snow to play in. Seems like nobody had 4 wheel drive back then. It had a 350 buick engine in it right from the factory.

1986 Jeep Cherokee 4x4, great vehicle! Wish I still had it, it would be the perfect trapping vehicle. That thing went anywhere, was just the right size, and was easy to work on!

This picture tells you really all you need to know about me in my late teen years. This is in front of a farmhouse that I rented for $60 a month. Caught a ton of coon on that property.

59 Rambler push button auto. It looked like it had been shot in the rear ended with a shotgun. My best friend and I were stopped once for doing 70, I looked at my buddy and said wow I didn't think it would go that fast. The cop almost fell down laughing, told me to slow that hot rod down and drove off chuckling. Ah the good old days.

88 Nissan pickup. I put in a sound system that pushed over 150db's with a 100w 2 channel amp, 2 10" subs, 2 tweeters, 2 6.5" door speakers. You could hear the music perfectly (not just bass or rattling) a block away

Mine was a 1965 International Scout. Lifted it by mounting spring perches above axles and made the front bumper myself also.

1989 ford ranger. New to me when I bought it in 2000 when I was 17 for $800.

I bought it off an Airman who was being stationed in Germany and wanted to sell it.

Learned to drive a manual transmission that day.

Just like this one.

1965 Jeepster commando. When I was 16 it was 14 and I got it from. My dad's friend who said if I could get it running I could have it. Be said it just quit on him one day and he parked it. After a quick look over I put a coil wire off my dad's truck on it and fired it up. The guys eyes got pretty wide but he gave me the title. Body was Michigan rough but I loved it.
