What did I eat for the first time New Year's Day?

What did I eat for the first time New Year's Day? - 01/02/20 08:45 AM

As some of you know, I and some family and friends eat something strange and new to most of us every New Year's Day. We have eaten kangaroo, python, rattlesnake, goat, beaver, muskrat, goose, iguana, ostrich, smelt, partridge, pheasant, fattened goose liver, bison, alligator, alpaca and more.

We almost ate coyote one year, when my friend Chad and I each shot one, while calling together a few days before. Chad vetoed the idea and created the phrase, "Friends don't let friends eat coyotes." He was less than appreciative of their dirty dog smell.

This year, we ate this:

Along with a lot of other stuff including shrimp, calamari, eggplant, brussel sprouts, duck bacon, cheeses and dates stuffed with smoked almonds, wrapped in bacon and dipped in honey and soy sauce.

Any guesses what the mystery meat was?

I didn't see bear on your list. Did you eat bear for the first time?
BTW, I had a taste of timber wolf once. If coyote tastes anything like wolf, you were right in taking the advice of your friend, Chad.

No correct guesses yet. The cuts are taken from the loin. It was good and tasted like beef.

Thanks Jeff. My youngest brother, Nick and my brother in law Greg, came up with the idea a long time ago. We are always looking for something interesting and attainable to try. Capybara would be a neat animal to eat, they are pretty pricey though. We will probably eat guinea pigs, which are somewhat similar, some New Year's Day.

It was a red meat, very similar in flavor to beef. I would not have guessed it would of tasted so similar, though I should have from another animal, that is somewhat related, I ate previously, which also surprisingly tasted like beef.

We originally were planning to buy water buffalo, but Jungle Jim's was out. Jungle Jim's is an amazing grocery store in Fairfield, Ohio a Cincinnati, Ohio, Northern suburb. The Smithsonian declared Jungle Jim's a national treasure. They have the world's largest beer selection, olive selection, jerky selection, cheese selection, bourbon selection and cigar selection. They carry fresh and processed food from around the world. The store is so large they give you a map when you enter. If you're ever in the area or want to make an interesting road trip, I highly recommend Jungle Jim's. The prices are good too.

Wag, I'm usually with ya but your way off on this one. Those in the know, know Irishmen taste like Jamesons whiskey, potatoes, coal, and a false nutty flavor that's called pride.

None of the camel smelled or tasted off. The colors in the picture do look off some. The meat was darker and more red than it looks in the picture. I would not hesitate to eat camel again. I ate the little bit of camel that was left for lunch today. Everyone who ate it liked it.
