Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/08/20 01:12 PM

Why Duke names them 550 or 650's,#2 or #3,when MB traps were made they didn't call them MB 600 on the 650,they parralled the MJ 600 a little but not copied 99% percent,i'm sure they will be decent traps, but it will be interesting to see how they hold up after 2,3 years of use.I'm not a longliner for mink, coon if I was I would be using Duke 1 1/2,but for coyotes I try to use the best I can, which are MB 550,some Bridger dogless #3 and Sterling MJ 600's coyotes really test your gear.

Does that mean that everyone should sell what ever they got and buy Duke? Dont think anyone said dukes wont work. I dont think it is much difference in some one buying a new truck when they could have got a used one. If you can afford it why not get it? It's only money, cant take it with you when you go. When I die and everyone goes through my traps it may make them feel like they got something nice when they pick up the mb traps.

My post doesn't say anything about anyone buying Duke traps. Just making an observation.

I think We're all proud of our gear

But I'd use that New Duke also...

4 coiled... Can't use it here. But I guess it would be possible to pull the 2 helper coils off and use it 2 coil?

Yes kb is another good one as for sterling's and others. There are alot of good traps and alot of traps that work. I have Duke, bridgers, mb and victor traps they all catch, some I think work better in some situations then others but they all get used.

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/08/20 04:40 PM

Matt, in regards to the 4-coil question in Oklahoma. I always assumed that our "double spring" wording would exclude 4-coil traps but I have been told that it doesn't since the coil spring traps still only has two levers. Saying that, I don't see the need for 4-coil traps when new but I'm not opposed to adding helper strings when the original two become weak. One interesting thing I noticed was when Outdoor Oklahoma did a show on trapping a few years back a well know Oklahoma trapper was using 4-coiled traps on the show.

I've always like the MB550 and didn't care for the MB650. I always wished MB would come out with a 600 that was of the 550 design. I have enough MB550 that I haven't tried the Duke 550 but can see the Duke 650 filling a need.

Maybe a MB 5.99999 or 601. grin

Duke #3 is my beaver and coyote trap of choice. And the 1 1/2 is my smaller trap too. I do use the old V#2 for mink and rats.....jk

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/08/20 04:52 PM

I think it might be a good point to say that in todays market we have an absolute plethora of good quality traps. In the past especially some of the older than me trappers couldn't say they had 5-10 choices for a good coyote trap. I personally think this trap answers the question a lot of trappers have asked. I don't run dukes right now but i wouldn't be against this trap being on my line at all.

I have some 650s and I use them they aren't my favorite trap but they have served me better then the bridger 3 dogless. The 550 is my main go to trap. Then I will use the few 650s I have. As far as legal or not who knows guess i will cross that bridge when i come to it. Some wardens say that dont care others act like you murdered a kid. I dont trap places where I have a high percentage chance of seeing a warden.
I got the 650s for 100 dollars for a dozen brand new never used, I couldn't pass that up. from a guy who bought them but then didn't want to trap. Most wardens close me are decent guys and really dont care.

100 dollars a dozen, wow. Wouldn't pass that up either

I'm game. Wanting to know the price already. Probably need to change the chain and swivels but if they are enough I'd like to try them out.

That being said I used the MB550 this season for the first time, Excellent!

Of course the jaw spread makes it illegal in GA. I wish they would change the stupid law.

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/09/20 12:38 AM

Duke traps are most likely made from recycled low grade cat food cans...... I'm very sad that anybody would even buy one of these copied traps they are pumping out.

Mtp could have cornered this market if they would have made this first.

I looked at a duke 550 my buddy had and looked like a good trap almost identical to the mb550s except a square pan, but with that said I've been nothing but happy with my MB550s and will continue to buy from MTP

I'll buy some Duke 650. Trappers have been asking for that style for awhile now.. Who cares what its called.. Not like the MB650 looks like a Sterling MJ600 or anything....

I really don`t need any more traps but I have around 8 dozen duke #4s that I put paws I trip pans on and love them.Ofcoarse I have MB 650 duke 550 bridger #2s and I`ll probably have to get some duke 650.

That's is seriously what I would love to happen I know some one on hear has to be good friends to them and could oast along the word. The mb 650 is a nice trap but if the had the 550 dog it would be sweet, the pan tension on the mb 650s are hard for me to get just right. 550 is just perfect just need to have a bigger jaw spread.

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/09/20 12:28 PM

I would like to know the outside jawspread. Pa. goes by the outside which is 6 1/2 inches. If the inside is 6 1/8 and they have the wide cast jaws it would be over 6 1/2.

Could do the old fashion thing and call Duke to see what the measurement is I bet.

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/09/20 03:56 PM

I thought in a former thread,it was said the outside thread was 6 7/8" ? That would make sense if the jaws were 3/8" thick.
Posted By: foxpee

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/09/20 05:34 PM

Just called Duke and they said 6 7/8 outside. No good for PA.
Posted By: Taximan

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/09/20 05:43 PM

It wouldn't take much to build another set of jaws to make tbem work for PA and other States-if they wanted to.

6 and 1/2 inch inside jaw spread for Va . so should be good to go here.

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/10/20 05:19 AM

I'm in for a dozen. No more base plating, night latching, and adding chain /swivels etc. to Duke #3.

looks like it might be too wide for land use in indiana

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/10/20 05:55 AM

As long as inside jaw spread and post to post is under 6 1/2" it's legal with an 1/8" offset. Guy on you tube said it was 6 1/8" . Have to wait and see. If not, more 550's then.

Did they happen to give post to post and inside jaw measurements ?

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/10/20 06:20 AM

not sure but i think mtp says the 550 is 6 1/4 post to post. those 650's look alot wider than that.
Posted By: foxpee

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/10/20 09:28 AM

6 1/8 inside and 6 7/8 outside. I did not ask about post to post because they were already illegal for Pa.

Re: Duke 650 pro series - 01/10/20 12:03 PM

I told Bill people will be screaming for a Duke 600 version with a jawspread that makes it legal in states like PA and NY.

I’ve handled one of these and let me say they are very user friendly.
