I was in MS over xmas and my son in law thought it was fake, Nobody fishes like that he said.

I had to educate him on icefishing.

They're called tipups and yes they are real. And they do catch fish.

Being from the south and never icefished he had no clue.

Re: Have yah seen this commerical .. - 01/12/20 11:10 PM

It's stupid. Makes him look like a booshdag. Should've consulted someone who knew what he was doing and used a Beaver Dam tipup and had a bucket of shiners.

A Canuck would drive out on the ice and use the intermittent wipers to jig. When the wiper slaps the windshield, you wake up and haul up the fish.

Re: Have yah seen this commerical .. - 01/12/20 11:41 PM

In WI there would be a fine for unattended fish line.
Seen that several times and there must not be much or any negative feedback regarding the issue.

Yeah he's sitting on shore with bones and reacts right away when the flag goes up. A lot better than the waterfront landowners that set flags then go sit in their cabin, or walleye guys that set flags at night then sit in their shacks and drink for hours between flag checks.

I'm surprised he even got a bite using a single wax worm on a treble hook.

No bait allowed on a treble hook...here in NH....single hook with bait is OK.

I own and love my Beaver Dam Traps.....but they are useless in snow conditions (way too short) and cant see the flag.

Re: Have yah seen this commerical .. - 01/13/20 01:13 AM

Seriously, we've used extensions on the flags before. Length of wire cable tied to the flag rod with a florescent orange styrofoam ball pierced at the end. Works.

My problem in Virginia is, we don't hardly ever get any ice, so my tip-ups end up on the bottom of the lake as soon as I drop them overboard...

My first impression of the commercial, was, that actors movies are so terrible he now has to resort to car commercials.

Re: Have yah seen this commerical .. - 01/14/20 12:18 AM

Boco Any one up your way use frozen smelt for lake trout. We use to rig up a system with a clothes hanger. Shaped into a square then bring the wire down to act as a lock for the line. Use the hanger end to hang the rig over the hole with a tree branch. I think we called them a Mouse trap. Tied flagging on the line to see when it got tripped flag would disappear. Been a long time since I did that. But worked for lake trout and northern pike. Cheap and easy.

Matthew is a born and bred TEXAN!!

He doesn't know crap about ice fishing...

He and his brother Rooster own several ranches together, one is about 50 miles from me....

He is a TEXAN through and through...

And a very nice gentleman, and yes, I have met him on several occasions..

Re: Have yah seen this commerical .. - 01/14/20 01:34 AM

Yea stinky, frozen smelts is used a lot for ice fishing pike and lakers.I seen that set up with the coat hanger before,we just use a willow whip with a bit of flagging tape on the end stuck in some slush. When it starts flapping just go pull in the fish.
Guys in town like to go out ice fishing the lake trout in April.

Not this year. Lake Erie has no ice on it. In the past we would drive our trucks out 3-4 miles on the ice. Last weekend there were boats on the Lake fishing.

Thanks Boco. I lived in Ely Mn for 3yrs. That is where I was taught that setup. Light weight packing in to lakes on foot was the reason for using it.
