Got this one early last week and killed a water moccasin Christmas Eve. Our Boykin Spaniel ran right past the moccasin. It was a little cooler then.

Spotted this one just before Christmas. First I've seen in this area. I'm about as far north as they occur in Georgia.

No snakes either here in Maine.I would much rather have the snakes.I lived in Virginia for 8 years and had the snakes there.

I am with you. I would drastically have to change my walking habits in the southern woods. Right now never give it a 2nd thought of stepping over a stone wall or log.

I have no desire trap in the vicinity of snakes. Worried about rattlesnakes if I decide to go on antelope hunt.

They can not move around under ice and must lie on top of it. Get bit and your blood will freeze and you will die within minutes

Any of you guys ever skin the snakes? We usta' skin whatever ones died in the zoo, home tanned them with alum and sold them in the gift shop. Got $50.00 for 3 to 4 foot rattlesnakes and they often sold in one day. Little less for copperheads, watersnakes and any other snake that had a design. Solid color snakes brought less but still over $25.00. and this was pre-1990 dollars. Eric

I made this hat band some years ago. Hat is beaver and holding up pretty good too. A few stains on it.

The snake skin was tanned with that orange bottle trappers tanning formula. About ten years ago the rattles fell off but superglue has been working since then. Haven't had to re-glue them. After I sewed it into a loop for the band, I sprayed it lightly with polyurethane. Scales are still not falling off if anybody else wants to do it

I am too scared of those cold weather snow snakes to do one of them.

Sure could use 2 matched copperhead skins for bow backing! I'll pay!
We're lucky here- arsenic from smelting ore is all throughout the soul. Kills rattlesnakes. I'd WAAAYYYY rather have the arsenic than the rattlesnakes, and as a plus, yer kids have two heads when born- so much more to love.

It's not simply dressing warmer the arthritis in my joints can't take the cold like I used to be able to.My body needs the heat and I feel awesome.

We harvest the nice ones, tan them and sell them to a Native American gentleman who makes the coolest knives up in the Dakotas. [Linked Image]

Re: Snakes Are Out! - 01/15/20 11:30 PM

yea they're not aggressive at all when your jumping up and down on top of them, haha.

Didn't see any snakes there today but saw two of the biggest red fox ive ever seen in my life there today going across the beaver dam, odd
site for down here. One had white tipped tail other one didn't, very pretty animals wish we had more of them here.
