What to do with hip caught raccoon? With pic

What should I do with those coon? Big boar, good fur, 4x coon. But it was hip caught with the snare and was missing his tail. I’ve been told tails don’t matter anyway but wondering if I’ll get anything if I try and sell it with the auction? Plan on taking furs to the North Dakota fur takers auction in March so I’ll be going anyway. Got some coyotes to sell and thought the few coon I catch might pay for gas. Or I could tan it and have it made into a hat, but with no tail that kind of defeats the purpose I suppose.

You don't need a tail for a hat, if you want a "trapper" style.

Tan it and use what you can out of it.It will be discounted severely at the auction with that kind and location of damage.

Finished coon brought $12.56 last year. Its not like it will matter a lot one way or another.

Tan it and save it with another if you want a tail hat, if not your going to be disappointed with the offer you get.

Agree that it is bad damage, I also like the hats without tails.

Sell it in the grease next time and save the worry.

My kid caught one like that that last year (early Jan), I put it up and sent it to NAFA. Never got thrown in the Section III pile, don't even think I had any Sec III coon out of the 38 I sent last year to NAFA. Maybe that one went in the $8-10 range, never can really tell about an individual skin unless its an single in its size. But this year is a different world isn't it...

I don’t like selling in the round. Dragging a 25lb coon around to get 3$ doesnt sound like fun. I know putting it up probably doesn’t pay but I like doing it and am getting better at it after just starting a few years ago. Everyone says get good so when the prices go up you’re ready right?! And since I killed him and his fur is in good condition I feel obligated to make use out of him.

Guessing about $3-$6, less half price that damage. I used snare lot years ago. Snaring coon with lower prices seem be going out. Replaced DPs. I only set 1 snare for coon this season

Just sell it and take whatever you get. No big deal in this market, no coon is worth big money.

Let's see by time you get It tanned around $25.00 then get It made Into a hat your probably looking at a $100.00 bill. I would be selling It.
