I think ohio is decent.. snares and footholds, as long as you have private land

I am enjoying TX. We are basically unrestricted in the pursuit of predators and invasive species. That is my kind of freedom

Texas has to be close. We have no regulations on trapping on private land. I’m not sure about public land but we really don’t have much public land.

Nebraska has few restrictions. That being said, there is a season on grinners and skunks. LOL

If it's quality marketable fur I'd say the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming in no particular order. Texas as well.

I like it here, pretty open regs.

No snare in N.C. except for beaver. Fox laws are by county and favor hound hunters. Some counties not open until after deer season.

ND comes to mind.

Re: Best state for trapping laws - 01/16/20 05:04 AM

Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming. There may also be other States with favorable trapping laws, but these are the States with good trapping laws that I would consider trapping for fur.

Get away from Sewer Falls and this is a pretty decent state and land is easy to get on. But you may need that powerball to pay the bills. If you arent farming/ranching, you wont make much money doing most things. But ya our regs are pretty relaxed here.

Re: Best state for trapping laws - 01/16/20 12:35 PM

About the only law we have in Louisiana is no traps with teeth.

Re: Best state for trapping laws - 01/16/20 01:32 PM

Not Oklahoma! Unless you are a NWCO there's no bodygrips, no snares, no four coils, plus 24 hour check and you get to post signs to let the whole world know what you're doing!

Many folks don’t know how restricted they really are compared to other places but each State have it’s own group of head scratching rules.

Re: Best state for trapping laws - 01/16/20 06:18 PM

I don't have issues with Nebraska other than maybe adding a one otter a season of more for Nebraskans.
When attending SD convention it sounds like their's are even less restrictive.

Re: Best state for trapping laws - 01/16/20 06:33 PM

Don't forget about that awesome restriction about can't use other parts from animals for a visual attractor within 30 yards from a set. So no t-bone sets or feathers for flagging cats.

Re: Best state for trapping laws - 01/16/20 06:45 PM

We don't have great fur but Mississippi's regs are pretty wide open. We have a 10" max on land set body grips and can't set body grips with a certain distance of a maintained public road. Our season runs from November 1 to March 15.We can trap Beaver, coyote and hogs year round.

I've heard of those stupid laws before. What is the purpose (or lack thereof)?

Re: Best state for trapping laws - 01/16/20 08:27 PM

I guess Georgia is not terrible after reading some of these others. My biggest gripe is the 5.75 inside jaw spread limit which eliminates many #3 sized traps. 650s are legal inside laminated. No big body grips or snares here unless within 10ft of water. Season is Dec 1st-Feb 28th. No closed season on coyotes or beavers.

Pretty sure you can use t-bone sets as long as it is just a bleached out bone with no hide or flesh on it. Here is how the regulation is stated:

It is unlawful to use any bait in plain sight within 30 feet of foothold traps set on dry land. Bait is defined as fish, animal flesh, fur, hide, entrails or feathers.

I’ve been told by biologists it’s because of our high deer population. A deer can escape a 550, but you’d be in for a treat with a 650. Haven’t come across a critter yet that I can’t catch in a 550.

I thought Wyoming would be mentioned more as well, seems to have great regulations from what I have researched.

I wouldn't reccommend Missouri. No conis on land bigger than 5x5 opening, daily land trapping check (suck), cable restraints only (big suck), population of 6m people so that probably equates about 12m pets to fill your traps. 1b possums (suck, suck). Cat populaiton is great but fur quality is very mediocre (rabbit backs), decent coyotes, no public land foot trapping without jumping through a million hoops. Coyotes have a season as well, can only trap from Nov 15th to the End of January......I need to move west. If I hit the powerball you can find me in WY.
