I can't beleive no Montana towns weren't in the top 5. Many days Montana has the lowest temp of the day for US locations. Lol

Colorado has two towns that are located above 10,000 ft elevation, they both are the highest elevation towns in the nation and I would bet they have been ignored in that study.

A true statement - but they are not going to report on anything that may decrease tourism or outdoor activities - like taking the family skiing. I lived in the Gunnison and San Luis Valley and both of those places were bitter cold.

The same probably goes for Montana

I too am surprised no where in Montana didn't make the list, growing up on the highline back then it was international falls Minn and Wolf Point and Fairbanks Alaska were in a neck and neck battle for the coldest spot.

Last night on the news the highline had -20 temps practically across the state.

Without looking for the lower 48 I would guess:
International Falls, MN
and
Cut Bank, MT

Don't know if they have the coldest average but are often tied or vying for the coldest.

Rogers pass about 10 miles east of Lincoln Mt. has a brass plaque stating the coldest recorded temp in lower forty eight -74 in 1972. Don’t remember exactly it’s probably still there on hwy 200.

On November 14 1976 the weather station at Dead Horse said the temp on Adigan (sp) pass was -83 with a 35-40 knot wind causing the wind chill to be somewhere below -120 (as low as their instruments would go).
All I know is my father and another welder three other helpers and I made the final tie in on the pipeline for that stretch and the cold was like I imagine outer space is. They told us in orientation exposed skin freezes in sixty seconds at sixty below or maybe it was thirty seconds. Been a long time ago saw some really strange things glad I got to go.

I believe it is. Southeast of me, international falls just Northeast of me. Living off grid in the Arctic crosshairs, priceless.
