Tech Stress - 01/18/20 09:33 PM

I ended up with a new smart phone and I hate it, 95% of what I don’t need 3% of what I do need and 2% who knows what, I would go back to a flipper any day. How this piece of junk is better is beyond me everything is a secret squirrel shake it twist it rub it here and there to get someplace. It’s like you get into places but then can’t find a way out or you change some settings and then your screwed big time. My old phone I could take pics and download right to my PC no problem then post here on the jpeg format. Now the pics go to google then become HTM format that’s useless to me I can’t post them on Facebook even. Now on the line I need to carry my phone and camera so I can text pics to another phone and my camera will download to my PC then.

Then the wife got me a iPad for Christmas that about killed me setting that thing up I locked myself out the first day I had to go to the phone store to get it set up, it kept asking for codes and ID numbers and I have no clue what ones it wanted. Still asking for codes I’m afraid to try type in for fear of everything going south again.

Someday those devices and a hammer will be in the same room and I will be back to a flip phone again. LOL.

Girlfriend's phone took a dump on her last week. She got a new one and asked me if she should throw the old one in the garbage. I said no, first decent day we get you are going to grab one of your guns and you are gonna blow that sucker to smithereens. She liked the idea.

Your quite Welcome to come up to my cottage and I'm sure we can line up a 21 Gun Salute to launch that phone into ORBIT.

ORBIT was a container they put on the side of roads in the 60-70's in Canada so roadside litter would be put there,,,and sent away.

All that do this or you won't be able to that stuff drives me to just not want any type of phone anymore. I lived with out a mobile phone most of my life, newer vehicles getting the same way.

Someday I'm going to invent an "old Geezer phone". Only controls are: bang it on the floor once to get Sarah from Andy Griffith show-"Sarah get me the fillin' station". And then bang it once more to hang up. Oh, and the back has a turkey call built in so at least it will be useful. Maybe someday..........

Re: Tech Stress - 01/19/20 02:02 AM

Fortunately for me, before I retired I had to learn how to work with computers, etc.
That said, some of these instructions for pairing phones, installing software, etc are so poorly written that it's just try this and try that.
Since I retired, I try to use a phone as little as possible, but it's nice to call the wife and tell here I'll be late or have a flat tire.
Even better is when she can get in touch with me and tell me she's ok, on her way home or needs help. The rest of it - Facebook, Twitter, etc. I could care less about.
Could I live without it? ABSOLUTELY!!

Re: Tech Stress - 01/19/20 01:15 PM

I am fairly computer literate but Apple and my iPhone irritate the heck out of me with the useless updates to the operating system. I don't down load them until they basically force me to. They always screw something up, usually multiple things.

This last time they "upgraded" my photo-editing software. It still functions the same but they changed all the icons and now when you try to edit a pic it shrinks down to a very small size so there is room on the screen for all the new icons. Some upgrade!

Hey Apple, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Yup, my new smart phone is a pain but for every time I want to throw it out I find something new and useful, like google earth or other mapping stuff that is really helpful at work and play.

It is a very useful tool.

A few days ago a farmer friend stopped by and we were yakking about different stuff. He ask how many fox I caught on his farm so far. He then asked why I never trapped the upper lane above the woods. I didn't know it existed.

I whipped out my phone and opened Google Maps. The two of us studied the satellite view of his farm, found the lane and I saw that it connected to a faint two-track that lead down to the bridge near where I always set three or four traps. It looks like I'll be able to make a big loop and drop in a few more sets.

This guy was never into computers until recently. He would ask me to look things up when I visited him. He surprised me when I opened the app by asking, "Is that Google Maps?" He has bought himself a lap top and is learning.

Computers are great tools, especially with internet access, LIKE HERE.
Most people overlook the fact that the smart phone they have in their hand is really a high end computer that one can make phone calls on.
No, I have a flip phone. Google Earth would be nice to have in my hand, but not for the extra money every month. At least not now.

Very true. iPhones are purposefully designed to be hard to repair. Purposefully designed to be exclusive to their own kind and become obsolete quickly to get you to upgrade to a newer model. They have caught making older models run slower over time. They are also marketed to encourage addiction to their platform. Look at the ridiculous lines of people who cannot wait to buy their latest model at exorbitant prices.

My Android based phone will do 90%-95% of what an IOS will do for 10%-20% of the cost.

Years ago the IOS platform had a big advantage over other phones on the market , now , only a slight edge. The rest is creative marketing for sheep who have to have it and are willing to drop $600/$800 or more to have it.

I got my phone at Walmart , went to a slightly pricey one , spent about $200. Samsung. Good phone , decent features , faster operating system/performance.
My service is through Walmart family mobile. $39.97 month , 16 gigs data , no contract. No problems with service , operates on the Sprint network. I had Verizon years ago and had several dead spots in my area.

I've been using an iPhone 5C for a lot of years now. I got it for free way back when Verizon still had contracts. It's been dropped many, many times and generally abused for a long time. The screen is cracked and the the lock/off button no longer works but everything else still does. I bought extra memory for it but still had to purchase an upgraded iCloud plan to store my tens of thousands of pictures.

I've always thought the Android vs iPhone thing was like teenagers arguing about Fords or Chevy's. Especially since most have only owned one or the other and not both.

I have owned both , I used to have an iPhone 4s. The IOS is a better platform , will not dispute that. But what they are selling for is just nuts. IMO , if Apple phones were priced in the $300-$500 range , it would be more towards what they are worth for what you get. A premium product for a premium price , not exorbitant. The other thing is how they make it so everything is Apple exclusive , a new power cord or charger with every new model so you have to buy their stuff to make it work with their stuff. The last model you have the cords/chargers will not work with the new model. Apple phones are very picky with which charger can you use. It is done intentionally.
Air pods for the latest ones are exorbitant too.
My girlfriend has a iPad 1st generation that she got as a hand me down from her dad. The battery is shot. I looked up to see what a battery costs and how to repair it. You have to take the iPad completely apart to replace the battery , the battery is the last thing you remove. She just uses it plugged into the wall. Who designs a product that way ? A company that wants you to have it factory serviced and has a shot at selling you an upgraded model because the cost of repairs is prohibitive.

Re: Tech Stress - 01/19/20 04:00 PM

I agree, they are way over-priced. Aren't all smart phones. I know I'll never pay anywhere near what they are asking for new ones, that's just nut's.

Like I said, I got my old 5C for free. I notice the battery really doesn't like the cold anymore. But, beyond that everything still works (except the off/lock button). When this one finally dies I'll have to do my homework. I've been with Verizon Wireless for fifteen-plus years and can usually get some pretty good "customer loyalty" deals like my current plan.

Re: Tech Stress - 01/19/20 04:20 PM

I've got a Motorola moto 6 something or other smart phone, 100-125 bucks brand new, with no contract... If it can't do something a $1,000 iphone can do, I haven't found it, plus the battery lasts 2-3 days.

I had a free flip phone for a long time and that was fine, but got to admit this smart phone can be pretty handy. If theres something you don't want or need, just turn it off...If I can figure the darn thing out anyone can, I never even saw a computer till my forties.
