anybody shooting these? Bear? what are you shooting for stopping power?

While I don’t own one, several people I know do. They seem to be great guns for the money. As for bear, don’t overthink it. They’re not nearly as tough as people think. I would however stay away from powerbelts. They are decent for deer at times but deer take less killing than most people want to admit. They just fragment way too easy for my personal taste.

Should work fine as I have owned one myself.Also shot bear with it.A nice broadside double lung shot just behind the shoulder.As with any gun avoid frontal shots and head shots on bear.

I have used a CVA Wolf .50 cal inline muzzle loader for 8 years. Very reliable without any failure to fire. Even forgot to unload the powder/projectile until the following hunting season and it fired no problem. I use the 250 grain TMZ bullets from Barnes. They are great performers on deer and would be fine for black bear with an adequate powder charge behind them. I use 90 grains of Pyrodex RS without any problems.

had a guy come to a muzzle loader training with one that he had won at a DU banquet the night before.

yes they can be made to shoot just fine, it is a simple break action gun 209 primer ignition

I pulled the breach plug put some anti seize on the threads and put it back in you tighten them snug then back off 1/4 turn and bring it just back to where it stops. many people over tighten breach plugs it has lots of threads it will stay in place just snug. a few patches to lube the barrel , fired a few primers to clean any oil from the breach plug then loaded up and we were shooting targets with it.

it was cold and snow was blowing swirling , keep your powder dry and they work just fine.

using my hunting load of a 385 Hornady hollow point hollow base 50 cal lead conical over 90gr 777 I can tell you it will traverse a deer nearly end to end from a 24 inch barrel. I have no reason to believe that it would be any different shot from the wolf than my NEF 209 break action 50 cal ML.

I would have no issue taking a bear with a ML just think of it as a single shot rifle that is slow to reload and make your shot good , have practiced well ahead of time shots within your range and you will do fine

use a damp patch to wipe the barrel between shots when sighting in so that the barrel is always the same clean , spit is fine , rubbing alcohol is also fine , balistol , moos milk , speed juice


moose milk = Napa water soluble cutting tool oil and water or rubbing alcohol

speed juice is 1/3 rubbing alcohal, 1/3 hydrogen peroxide , 1/3 murphy's oil soap works best from a small stray bottle to moisten patches

hunting I never had to reload more than 2x so I dont' swab between shots if I did I carry patches and would stuff one in my mouth for a few seconds ( patched round ball shooters who plan to shoot a bunch will stick a few patches in their cheek to keep them ready)

when I start shooting for groups I run a lubed patch before my first loading so that I am as close to the same on every shot

like any ML clean at the end of the day with warm water and dish soap dry and lube check it in a few days to make sure you got it all clean by running a white lubed patch.

just like in cartridge reloading keeping your procedure the same every time keeps the best consistency in ammunition , your barrel is your case

clean the case = swab the barrel the same
use the same powder , measure the same amount each time
use the same size and weight projectile
press the projectile down on the powder with the same force
use the same primer

= get the most consistent results

I have an optima not sure what the difference is between the two. I shoot a 300 grain 45 cal xtp non mag wit a harvester sabot and 90grns of blackhorn 209. For black bear i wouldn t change a thing if i had a chance to go

I Have a Knight Disc 50 and use 100 grains 777 with Barnes MZ 250 grain. Shot two bears with it one in NH one in VT. Deadly combination no problem killing bears as mentioned earlier use good shot placement. I always go for a double lung shot first.

All 3 of my boys have had one since they were in school. There in there 30's now. Never had any problems with them. Easy to clean also.

I have used mine for 2 years, purchased new shot 3 deer with it. Probably 75-100 rounds through it so take it as you will.

I use hornady XTP with green sabots and 100gr 777 pellets. I used to use the 185? Grain XTP but they quit making them and upped to 225?gr. I'm xtremely happy with both out to 100 yards. I always run a patch with water through between shots and dry it up. Super simple to clean and lightweight. An absolute joy to shoot. I do want to try the Barnes TMZ through it.

STAY AWAY FROM POWERBELTS AT ALL COSTS!!! They may be more accurate but they hardly retain any weight on impact and don't pass through/expand. Yes it's all about shot placement but being realistic nobody always takes or gets the perfect shot. Those that say they do often go home hungry.

so what do you guys shoot when you just want to shoot? Seems like all that is expensive to just shoot......when u want to just shoot can you use roundballs etc for economy?

I always shot my hunting load.

I cast my own round balls they also work fine for the Wolf with light charges of powder for targets at 25-50 yards the twist is a little fast to drive a ball hard

in a 50 cal 25-30 grains of black or 777 does well on targets at 25 , would take a squirrel or rabbit with some authority also

you need to play with patch thickness you want a snug fit but not have to beat your hand up starting balls

most people with modern inline muzzle loader are season extenders , sight in a little practice but not really an afternoon of shooting each month types with their ML.

I also cast my own conicals Lee R.E.A.L but still shoot mostly patched round ball for targets and fun

I carry a 50 cal Long barrel Traditions ML pistol


I missed a shot at a 12pt buck....the buck trotted straight to where I was hiding in a slashings pile. The 54cal Lymans empty muzzle was 4 feet from where the deer stopped. So now I always bring an extra ML

common round ball twists are 1:70 1:66 1:60 combo twists that will run roundball and short conicals is 1:48 Thompson center used this in most of their hawkens style rifles and similar. the modern inline is a 1:30 or 1:28 twist

we have successfully run patched round ball from several of the the fast twist guns at 25 yard targets a few times the best ML youth for the county 4-H shoot shot with a fast twist inline rifle.

cvs wolf included in those that we have tried and worked reasonably well at 25 yards with a light powder charge and patched round ball.
