Owl nest boxes

Owl nest boxes - 01/25/20 12:47 AM

I was wondering if anyone has built and placed any of these and how they worked? I know wood duck houses are very effective but wasn’t sure about owl houses. I’m not looking to do great horn owl type just the smaller ones where they have an actual box built.

Bob, I've built and placed maybe 400 owl nesting boxes. PM me, and I'll try to get back to you tomorrow morning. Habitat is key. In some places and some years, I've had nearly 50% occupancy rate by owls. Other places and years, I've had very little success. Marten periodically like them as natal boxes as well in some instances. Hit me...

Where there are lots of natural cavities, most owl species prefer natural. Where there are fewer natural cavities available (logging, wildfire, fewer cavity excavators), the boxes are used heavily.

Very nice.Looks like from one of the pictures the owls chew on them alot.

Re: Owl nest boxes - 01/25/20 02:02 PM

The chewing is from red squirrels, although the picture sure gives the impression it is from owls. Porcupines will also eat the boxes occasionally.

Red squirrels, flying squirrels, flickers, and marten often use the boxes for raising litters as well. I've never been in places that had gray squirrels or fox squirrels, but I assume they would use them as well.

I tried hanging boxes for owls on my place, and have/had several out for 20+ years. The Gray Squirrels, Red Squirrels, Flying Squirrels and Flickers L.O.V.E. them. As far as I know, an owl hasn't stood a chance to even peek inside one of mine because of the rest of the beasts. Ditto my 2 Wood Duck boxes here where I live now. I was hoping a Saw Whet or E. Screech would move in, I've got both in the neighborhood. Maybe the common Pileateds keep them in cavities here.

Could you give us an idea of the rough size of the nest box , also the diameter of the entrance hole. I make blue bird houses , and donate them to our local hospital, for long term patients, they paint them and sell , for needed supplies. Probably could adjust the sizes. How high do you usually mount them . Also do they prefer a bare or brushy tree. Very nice project. The people that buy them , really like old weathered barn board and a rough slab. I agree that porkepines love plywood, just like candy to them. Good Luck . old243

Squirrels and porcupines seem to like chewing on plywood. Maybe the glue tastes like food to them.

Re: Owl nest boxes - 01/25/20 03:28 PM

3/4" CDX. The base dimensions I use are 12x12". The front is 12x16. Back is 12x20. Sides, of course are angled 12x16 to 12x20. Top is 20x20" to overhang a couple inches on the sides and front. Hole centered 5" down from the top is oblong 2 1/2 x 4" (long axis horizontal). This way, two full boxes can be made from a sheet of plywood. If you make them from cedar or redwood dimensional lumber, they will last a lot longer, but, of course, much more expensive. Don't use OSB as it starts to flake and fall apart in about 2 years. Don't paint them. Work good for boreals, saw-whets, screech owls. Need to be at least 20' off the ground. Best if there is no brush immediately below the box.

The last image i put in (above) is an adult female boreal owl just returned to the nest box. They drop their wings like that, then quickly squeeze into the box, turn around, and peek out watching.

Very important, especially in colder climates, to provide 4-5" of nesting material in the bottom of the box (I use planer shavings) or the eggs will freeze in early spring.

Not mentioned above, but kestrels really take to the boxes as well if the earlier-nesting owls aren't using them.

Less wild house cats running around killing everything.

Re: Owl nest boxes - 01/25/20 05:35 PM

A friend has a wood duck box that has never been used by woodies, but the screech owls are there about every year.

Re: Owl nest boxes - 01/25/20 05:44 PM

trapNH -

The smaller owls that are cavity nesters are generally mouse/vole specialists. The more of them I have around my place, the more feed there is for domestics (cows/horses) and for deer/elk. Too, the larger platform-nesting owls do tend to keep the house cat numbers down a bit.

Re: Owl nest boxes - 01/25/20 07:28 PM

I've found that leaving 1 side of the box open will keep the squirrels from taking over. A short lip on that side will keep the wood chip/saw dust nesting material in, and I put that on the north side to keep direct sun out.

Do you find the need to clean your boxes every year?

Re: Owl nest boxes - 01/26/20 02:02 PM

Tray -

Yes. Seems to be important to clean out the boxes and put in fresh wood chips if the box was used.

So will that owl actually utilize all of that prey herself or is she "putting food by" for when her eggs hatch ?

OR.......is it just habit for her to keep hunting whenever the opportunity presents ?

Re: Owl nest boxes - 01/26/20 04:55 PM

No. Great horned owls are platform nesters rather than cavity nesters. Like most owls, they don't construct their own nests, but usually take over red-tailed hawk (or similar hawk, eagle) nests. They are early nesters (usually start nesting in February/March in this country), so they can take over a nest long before the hawks start their nesting. If you want to encourage GHOs to nest, there are plans on the internet for building platforms that the GHOs or the Great Grays will use.
