Snared this big male yesterday in a coyote set. He is already at the taxidermist for a full body mount. Aside from the coloration, it is also one of the biggest fox I've ever caught.

That one will make a great mount. I've never caught one, but my neighbors often talk about seeing foxes that are almost black.
Good on you.
Pete

What’s a “cross fox”?
Whatever you’re holding is absolutely beautiful!!

Re: Cross Fox - 02/02/20 05:54 PM
A cross fox has a black cross on its back.

Re: Cross Fox - 02/02/20 05:55 PM
So it’s a Grey Fox with black on its back?

Re: Cross Fox - 02/02/20 05:56 PM
Contrary to common belief, a "cross fox" such as this isn't a mix between a red and a grey or anything of the sort. It is a genetic melonistic variation. Similar to a grey squirrel that is black. I am getting a full body mount done. Didn't weigh it but the taxidermist said (responding to the size of it) that we may be limited as to which forms are commercially available that will fit it without modification. So it's a big critter.

Two red foxes can produce a litter that includes a silver and/or cross foxes or basstards. It all depends on which of the recessive genes the parents carry.
They are all the same species.
Color variations of the red fox are more common the further north you go.And the northern fox are notably larger than those further south.

Beauty cross, how common are they down there?

Re: Cross Fox - 02/03/20 01:05 AM
If it's a lot bigger then the typical red fox you find in the area I would think there is a good chance it is an escapee or the progeny of an escapee.
I used to trap native fox in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, they're called Cascade Fox not surprisingly. About one-third of them are either cross, or black phase.

Red, cross, silver, and black are all color phases of the same species. Locally, I find about 25% of the foxes are colors other than red. A few years ago, I saw a den with a coal-black vixen, a black kit, a cross kit, and three red kits. One of the coolest fox furs I've ever seen was a Samson cross. It was a uniform cream color except for a distinct chocolate colored cross about an inch to two inches wide running from elbow to elbow, and from between the ears to about mid-tail.

A buddy of mine caught a sampson cross back in the 70's-it was just like you described. He had a rug made out of it-he still has it I believe.
Excellent catch and post a photo when the mount is done!
