Grow em big in Nebraska - 02/07/20 05:13 AM

Here is a picture of a man in NW Nebraska with his lion taken during the Nebraska lion season. It was collared by the game and parks during their catch and tag research study. The person who posted this said the cat was 7 years old and 171 pounds. Congrats to the hunter. [Linked Image]

Dumb question...is there value in the fur? I'd probably soil myself, if that was in one of my traps!

The cat looks familiar. He must have come from here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Maybe its just the black collar.

Re: Grow em big in Nebraska - 02/08/20 02:43 AM

The cat in the picture was the big cat most locals knew about up there in that area of NW Nebraska. I don't know for sure but the collar may have been placed on the cat by the Nebr G & P a few years ago. They did a very intense study of the mountain lion in that region. They trapped many lions with big cage box traps and collared and ear tagged many . Also I think they may have found some dens with kittens and did research on them also. The G & P had a person or two with a dog looking for lion scat all over the region. The scat was used to get a DNA profile of the cat the scat came from. All the information was taken and then using a big game model developed from past research they came up with a probable number of the cats in the area. The number was around 59 a couple years back. Many locals say that # is wrong and there are many more than that. There are several killed each year either by getting hit by a vehicle or not leaving the limits of a couple small towns around there or killing livestock or acreage critter. But the cats are there, just how many no one can say for sure.

Awesome cat! Ditto what Sundance said on the flavor. Just like lean pork. I've had lion tacos and burritos before. Excellent.

NebrCatMan, I think you're right on no one can say for sure. I always wonder where they come up with numbers for how many of so and so species there are. I am sure they can get somewhat close-ish, but I don't think there's a way to be too accurate on such things in such vast country.

Excellent meat, IMO every deer should be processed through a cougar before being eaten.
