Trap anchor - 02/14/20 04:35 AM

Hey fairly new to trapping just purchased some new legholds they didn’t come with any anchor rings or anything just the swivel I am just wondering what everyone recommends using as anchor rings for coyotes? I picked up some chain extensions with a about a 6 guage ring is this enough for coyotes and possibly wolves?

I use chained super stakes and connect them to the swivel with heavy duty j-hooks

Any connections for wolves should be welded. Some also do it for coyotes.

Use an Earth anchor, a stake like that in my type of soil, farm dirt, it won't hold all coyote catches

T94 I don't think anyone would trust that set up you have there to hold wolves. I'm no wolf trapper but I have seen what guys use and at the very least you need to do some welding and get rid of that last piece of chain and ring. As for the stake I don't think anyone would trust that either for wolves. The set up may work for coyotes but even then most people would change up a few things.

What ADC said. Get rid of the last piece of chain and ring. Replace with at least #2 American made welded chain, if wolves are a possibility # 3 chain would be a better choice. Many other DLS users on here also use a quick link around the base plate for chain attachment instead of off the spring end. Again, in case of a wolf catch. If your going to use one stake, I'd say minimum of 24" long, 30" better. A big enough welded lap link or large welded s hook of some type for the stake to go through. You want totally free swivel/spin of the link on the stake so it doesn't get hung up on the rough surface of the stake
Of course, a Wolf fang anchor with long enough cable or cross staking with 2 stakes is always a good option.

Thanks for the advice The stakes that I am using are 30” long of 5/8 rebar

I agree. I really liked using Pogo anchors. I needed a puller to get most of mine out of the ground.

I would be more worried about that swingset chain then that stake in frozen ground .

What size and make are those traps?

Twin loop chain needs to go. 3 machine chain or better for wolves
Rebar stake is fine but you must have longer chain. 4 or 5 feet so a wolf can not get over it and pump or Jack the stake. Then it's what are doing with all that chain at the set.
But a drag may better suite your app. here .
The trap itself has caught countless coyotes and I am sure a bunch of wolves but only thing is like most coyote traps they tend to be a one and done on wolves.
I do catch a wolf here and there while trapping coyotes its on a disposable stake or a drag anymore , and I still run a bit longer chain on my traps for some of the reason listed above.
You might go to wilderness forum those boys will get you headed in the right direction what works up north there.

The advise I give every new trapper is on this subject. The animals are a lot stronger than you think. I don’t know how many new trappers I’ve seen target coyotes and use 12” stakes. Both wood and metal. Or use one or two strands of wire to attach a trap to a stake, drag or something solid. Or 3’ of chain on a drag the size of my hand.

With that set up, I see your anchor failing at the extension chain first. And that’s if you catch a coyote. If you get a wolf, you have a number of failing spots on that set up.

First- it is a foothold, not a leghold.
Second- add a swivel to the middle of the trap chain.
Third- replace the swing set chain with #2 American chain (if you like longer chains. I prefer shorter, like the length that came on your trap.)
Fourth- WolfFang earth anchor.
And in my opinion, I would do a few things to the trap itself. Bubble weld the jaw tips, baseplate, center swivel and pit pan.
*EDIT* I know nothing about trapping wolves. My recommendations are for coyotes.

Dude!!! Go talk to some Canadian trappers before attempting to trap ANYTHING in Canada!!!! Seriously. You are either going to lose your equipment or get arrested for breaking Canadian furbearer harvest laws if you’re not familiar with what is recommended for the animals you’ve stated.

There are a bunch of excellent Canadian trappers on this forum. Search them out. Ask questions via private message or get some phone numbers and pick their brains. THEN buy equipment because you’ll understand what it’s used for, how it’s used, modifications it might need to be more effective, where to set, how to set, and a hundred other bits of information you’ll appreciate when you actually start setting traps.

I think having a "ring" on the end of some trap chains (like pictured), is just a traditional holdover from long ago. I would never call it or consider it an anchor ring, nor use it to attach any type of anchor, unless maybe for muskrats.

I also assume a heavier chain and larger trap would be needed for wolves. I don't know that I would trust the chain in your picture even on coyotes.

Maybe someone that traps wolves could post a picture of a trap set up for wolves like they use.

I am well aware of all the regulations for trapping in Canada, I am not done modifying these traps like I said I just got them my question was mostly about the ring being strong enough for coyotes and possible wolf

I would personally not use that ring on coyotes and certainly not on wolves but I don't know much about wolves other than they are stronger than coyotes by a long shot

Re: Trap anchor - 02/14/20 10:27 PM

Even if that chain is strong enough for wolf, which I personally doubt, I wouldn't use the ring for anything. I would cut it off.

Re: Trap anchor - 02/15/20 03:29 AM

I'm a novice wolf trapper but I run serious equipment for wolves. JC Connor wolf shock spring, 4 wolf swivels and 24" of #7 chain, all connections welded except where I attach a wolf fang anchor to the chain with a 1/8" quick link. Just my 2 cents and again I'm not an experienced wolf trapper. The foot hold trap is a Sleepy Creek #4 1/2 with laminated jaws.

Re: Trap anchor - 02/15/20 03:51 AM

In Ontario we are not aloud to use any long springs for coyote or fox, none meet aihts certification, in order to meat regs it’s either rubber jawed or offset jaws, centre baseplate swivel only, with a max chain length of 12.2 inches with and inline shock absorber (spring) when they are attached to a solid anchor point, anchor point has to be an earth anchor or double 30” rebar stakes with a swivel. When useing a drag chain you still need your 12.2 inches of chain with inline shock absorbers and centre baseplate. Drag chains should be 2 1/2 times body length of target catch to prevent anchor having a “whipping” effect. I’m not sure sure on Alberta’s regulations but I would verify before you got to far into modifying what you have. Not trying to sound negative or a jerk and please don’t inturped the wrong way only mentioning what our laws are in Ontario
