Bridger Special #5

Bridger Special #5 - 02/14/20 06:12 PM

How are you guys setting these bridger special #5 coil springs? And please don’t tell me you’re setting them by hand lol cause that ain’t working for me!

I’m barely able to get them set in my house while balancing and holding onto a chair or the door knob and I need extra leverage to push my feet down on them to get them set.

This will only be a circus out in the snow.

Is there a setting tool I need to buy for these traps?

Thanks!

You bought the wrong trap! Lol, shoulda got the longsprings. They make setters iirc

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/14/20 06:29 PM

I can just barely get them set sitting in my kayak by putting the trap on my thigh, pressing the levers down with my forearms, and then grabbing the jaw and holding it open to set the dog. It's super dangerous though, it's almost impossible and I know if I keep it up sooner rather than later it's going to snap on my hand and I'll be stuck. I have no problems standing on them and setting them, but that's not always possible in sand or mud or snow, so it's not very helpful.I need some setters too.

I made a set of setters for them -- best 20minutes i ever spent. but i think mtp sells them also.

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/14/20 06:37 PM

I just looked -- it looks like mtp has the ones for the mb750s -- i don't know if they will work on the bridgers - but that is what i patterned mine after. by the way i also use a snap link to hold them together and to my belt loop when not in use.

I made these as an experiment...they did work well but failed structurally.
They are only 1/4" rod so if you made them from thicker stock they'd be fine.
I had a video of myself setting a Bridger #5 with them but can't find it.

Lol that’s crazy you can set them in a kayak!! And yes one day you probably will have one pinch your finger or hand and you’ll be screwed lol.

How did you make the setters? Is there a YouTube video or something to watch? I didn’t even know if they made setters for them or not. Just surprised how tough they are to set under perfect circumstances.

Get ahold of Dave Shelton on here.

I'm sure he makes setters for them.

I have 4 different pairs for several different sizes and kinds of traps.

They work!!

Holy crap slydogx those are exactly what I need! Those are the ones from Dave Shelton?

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/14/20 08:14 PM

The ones in the youtube video are the Dave Shelton setters (that's not my video, it's the guy from Southern Snares in the USA).
The pair I made I just bent out of 1/4" rod with my Princess Auto rod bending fixture.. like said in the post above, I only made them as an experiment and they worked well but failed after a few tries because of poor design/planning/materials.

I do believe a decent pair would be fairly simple to make, the hardest part is measuring for and planning out all of the bends.

Mine aren't one handed but they work well for me. I like the one picture with the bobbers on the lanyard as they can be a challenge to find sometimes.

What kind of girly trappers are they turning out
up there in Manly Manitoba these days.

Any real he-man USA trapper worth his salt can set those
traps by hand without help from a knee, the ground,
and any sort of sissy setting tool.

No wonder the United States beat your arses in "War of 1812". laugh

I have set them over my knee but it is tough. Set them on the ground and use a knee to keep them open, nothing to it.

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/14/20 08:34 PM

I must be a sissy too, I have some for my MB 750's and was real glad when I got an ungloved left hand in one this year. I was able to get the trap off pretty fast while working on my vocabulary!

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/14/20 08:39 PM

The sissy way. Start the levers down with your hands while kneeling down. Put your knee on the free jaw to help as they start to open. Now they are open and your knee has the free jaw pinned down allowing you to work the dog. Easy peezy

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/14/20 08:45 PM

To me when you out in the woods there is no sissy, you have no one to prove anything. Do the safe thing when out in the woods.

It's even tougher when you're short chained to a drowning slide in quick sand- I use them all the time.

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/14/20 09:54 PM

People have seen me at convention doing Demo. I have a pair of Sleepy Creek setters that a friend beefed up with a piece of flat steel. on my knee left setter goes under my left leg right setter pushed down with right hand . left hand pushes dog down and lifts pan. there all set just adjust for level

LOL!!!! Man I’d be working on my vocabulary too!

I got my left pinky caught in a Duke #3 a couple years ago and I was nearly puking cause it hurt so bad! The jaws caught me right where the lever pushes up on them. Hurts just thinking about it lol! Pulled my traps the next day cause I was too scared to get it caught again lol.

Never thought I'd see the day that a
Northern Canadian Manitoba Trapper
would be afraid of the water, won't walk on ice,
or was too limp-wristed to set a beaver trap
without the aid of accoutrements. laugh

Spineless Jellyfish we got here !!! laugh

J.P., you'll never be manly enough to
join Boco's Canadian militia bush rangers
to help defend the honor of Canada
in the next War of 1812. laugh

I just bought my One Hand Setters about a month ago. After using them you will be kicking yourself for not buying them sooner.

I like my one hand setters for setting my Bridger #5 coils. When ya get old, those accoutrements can be handy.

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/15/20 02:59 PM

When I was a bit younger I trapped swamps with #4.5 Newhouse. Nothing hard to stand on so I learned to set them by hand. It's been awhile since I've used them but thought I'd see if I still could do it. Used a #114 and had no problems!

Re: Bridger Special #5 - 02/15/20 03:12 PM

I set the Bridger #5 over my knee if I'm in water on on the ground with my feet if I'm not. I didn't learn how to do that from watching The Bachelor.

I can still set them by hand, but prefer to work smarter. The older you get the more you tend to go that way. At least that's how it is with me.

I usually just set 'em with my right hand, unless I'm feeling really tough that day, the I use my left hand instead.

No Way J.P.

Truth be told,
walleyed is scared to death
of all those big Coil Spring Traps.

I wouldn't get any nearer than
two zip codes away from those things.

I use modified #44 Blake & Lamb
Double Long Springs which I have been
caught in bare handed several times.

But any time I can bust Canadian balls
I take the opportunity to do so. laugh
