Making some Pea Soup for supper!!! - 02/24/20 11:25 PM

Had ham for supper yesterday and while I was cutting the meat off the bone I thought about my Mom making pea soup when I was a kid.
So I decided to keep the bone and make some soup with it today!

We make several batches of split pea and ham soup every winter. Very good along with the veggies and a nice way to enjoy ham as well.

Did you buy dried split peas? If you did arent they flavorless rather than say canned beans or frozen? Im only asking because I love split pea soup but I dont make it . Curious to know how to make good split pea or whole pea soup.

Yes I used dried split peas. I think they had quite a bit of flavour. The soup tasted like peas lol.

I start off with a good smoked ham, boiled.I check the stock often while reducing, depending on the ham,it can get too salty, then if you have to dilute it it will not be as good.
I also use the drippings from the ham,and the bone to make a stock from a roasted ham.I use dried yellow peas.

ok,,we just went and bought dried split peas,we had smoked pork in freezer. Ill shave carrots and i have boullion already so will put in crockpot all night. Do u pre soak the peas?

Re: Making some Pea Soup for supper!!! - 02/25/20 10:43 PM

to blend or not to blend that is the question.

my dad made split pea soup when ever he was home sick from work , lots of bay , a fair amount of pepper but he ran it through the blender and I prefer un-blended.

I have always just used dried split peas , if I think about it I soak the peas over night. if not a good rinse and let them set for while I cut up the carrots , and onions.

almost always have ham hocks in the freezer but any time I can scavenge a ham bone from a family gathering I will.

why ? a real man can cook a soup.

Re: Making some Pea Soup for supper!!! - 02/25/20 10:50 PM

No need to pre soak the peas. Add some chopped celery and onion to the pot of soup too!

Bring it all to a boil then turn the heat to low, scoop all the foam off the surface and let it simmer for about 2-2.5 hours. The peas will soften up in that time and even mush. The carrots will mostly dissolve.

5 cups of split peas
5 grated carrots
7 celery stalks
1 onion
4 bay leaves
1 tablespoon of salt
1 teaspoon of pepper
Ham bone with some ham still on
12 cups of water

That’s the recipe I followed.

Just about what I do only I add whole baby carrots and at least 1 jalapeno I skip the salt and add crushed red pepper i like to buy one small boneless ham and just dice it and add it to the pot. I use a crook pot most of the time.

Yup! Oh and give it a stir every now and then while it’s simmering. The split peas will start out sticking together in a clump, but they break apart as they heat up.

I love pea soup and here’s my take. Get a good smoked ham hock and boil it down till it falls apart. Pull it out and trim the heavy fat and let the water cool and skim more fat off. Then add peas, plenty of diced ham, celery heart and leaves, diced carrots and onions. Make it thick.

Whoa, back the bus up, I thought you were gay, the way you look and the way you post screamed gay. I will go on record saying I have no problem with the gays, love is love, simple as that. But it does make sense cause your Daddy Les doesn't seem the type that would accept a gay son (get off my lawn), and we can tell he loves you. So my bad and thank "your wife" for the great recipe. grin
