Is it Turkey Season yet?

Is it Turkey Season yet? - 03/07/20 08:06 PM

I enjoy quite a few things, but not too much I enjoy like calling in and killing or even getting duped by a long beard. Been getting a few on cams in half strut on my favorite ridgeline. Got me excited enough I picked up a new mouth call today. Thinking about using the bow this year. Already have an idea where I want to be opening morning as long as the birds keep roosting in the same area as the last few years.

How bout you? How long till your season starts? Who has the same itch I do? Almost too long of a wait here. Season starts May 2nd.

I’m looking forward to it, I also have the same itch for turkey hunting you do.

Good luck with your bow, I’ve thought about giving it a try some day, if also like to use a muzzleloader one day.

Delaware opens up on April 11th

Maryland opens on April 18th

I have a couple spots pre scouted out where they usually are every year.

Good luck to you.

I went last year for the first time ever and got one, but it was on family land. Going to try public this year. I've scouted the area several times and it looks promising. Any tips for actually getting a tom to come to me?

Hi Frank, I'm in Wayne Co. Ohio. We don't have a good turkey population here, quite frankly, no pun intended lol, I'd love to blame it on that, but I can't. I have had success with every other critter but fail miserably with turkeys. Had some close calls though!

Re: Is it Turkey Season yet? - 03/07/20 09:42 PM

I’m by no means the best turkey hunter in the world, but I make sure I spend a few afternoons the week or two before season scouting after work, listening for birds at the end of day and figure out their roost, how they get in it and which way they will head in the morning. Farmland birds are pretty predictable the first few day’s of the season. Public land birds here are covering some serious ground, a lot of hardwoods and mountain laurel. They are run and gun type situations.

One thing I remember reading on here, a gentleman said he raised turkeys and stated that a yelp was a hen saying, hey I’m over here, and a cluck was hey come here. I thought back on quite a few times I got hung up birds to close the distance, and the cluck was the ticket, regardless of the call I was using. Call shy birds are tough, need to know where they like to strut morning or mid day and hang out waiting. Good luck

The bow should be a neat challenge, I’m gonna try a blind or build some brush blinds if needed. Keeps me shooting my bow more too.

42 days I be in KY.. Then back for PA and NY..

Just set up a new blind in the garage for the Mathews and put a new pistol grip stock on the stoeger to try out..

Bow if it's a sit and wait. Gunning if it's a run and gun..

Re: Is it Turkey Season yet? - 03/07/20 10:12 PM

I tried three years in a row. I'd see turkeys in a certain spot a couple times in a row, even have them walk right past me as I stood still while out looking for mushrooms, and go out and sit directly on their route the next day, and never see or hear from them again. I gave up.

Most people that struggle to bag a bird make the same mistakes often.

Call to loud
Call to often
Move on the bird
Don’t sit long enough when a bird goes silent.

Not that those are the only mistakes a person could make. LOL

Call softly always at a level just below the birds interest level if you answer every call that bird will hang up and wait for you to come to him. Learn a few simple calls mix them up one might be the one to call that bird in, simple purrs and clucks will go a long ways.

I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t made all those mistakes and more. Shooting my compound and my recurve tomorrow afternoon. I’m sure the bows gonna present some new challenges, and a few learning opportunities

Best to have a blind of some kind as the draw is the hardest part of that kind of hunt.

Re: Is it Turkey Season yet? - 03/08/20 12:14 AM

Definetly going to set up a blind and build a brush blind or two where I know they typically travel and go from there

They taunt me right outside of my front door. We’re always covered up in birds here.

Holy smokes deerhunter51, you better be able to kill a couple, they already strutting in TN? I saw my flock today while she’d hunting 2 long beards. Like you all I can’t wait, I almost like it more than deer hunting these days. I have the luxury of going every morning (and I do) so it does get a little old but I know it goes fast!

Re: Is it Turkey Season yet? - 03/08/20 12:30 AM

They started strutting here about a week ago. Toms were just gobbling in the woods behind the house about 30 minutes ago before they went up to roost. We limit out every year either down behind the house or on the farm next door - turkey and venison always on the menu here.

Re: Is it Turkey Season yet? - 03/08/20 12:33 AM

That’s an awesome pic, Turkey hunters dream to have that at less than 20 yards and those gobblers popping off
Posted By: JEckman

Re: Is it Turkey Season yet? - 03/08/20 12:37 AM

Blinds make bowhunting so easy for turkeys it's dumb.. Don't let any cracks shine through and keep in the shadows. Can practically do jumping jacks with a gob at 5 yds...

Gotta be perfect not in a blind..

That said patients kills most turkeys if you truly wait them out not meaning 20 minute waits..

May 1. Last year was terrible. Weather was wet and cold. They hardly talked where I hunted. The year before we were overrun with toms

I cant wait either. Have about 4 weeks or so for my season to open. Was out shed hunting today and marked a couple roost trees on OnX Maps. Then saw a flock of 10 birds all long beards feeding across a field no hens in soght.

How bout them Nebraskans? I was out there 7-8 years ago in the Curtis area. Lots of birds. Killed a nice Tom and a jake. Both merriams. Our easterns are pretty but those merriams are really cool birds. Saw some Rios but never had any opportunities to connect.

Re: Is it Turkey Season yet? - 03/08/20 02:36 AM

At one time I use to get pretty excited about turkey season, I still enjoy bow hunting them but have had less interest in hunting these days. I did get a license the other day so will hunt them for a few days any way. Last year was the first year I didn't kill a turkey in 35 years or better.

My buddy with his 2016 Hills bird that bird was right next to the road roosting at sunrize we worked our way to it and parked in a little pull over spot, when it gobbled again it was about 80 yards away on a hill. It was so close we had to walk down the highway and cross the fence to start working it. Took about 1 hour for it to come past the truck where it hung up for a while. He called and called went silent for a bit but once he got past the truck he fired up again, best hunt ever in the Hills.

He died less then a year later from cancer.

Tomorrow’s the day, since I last posted on this thread I’ve been isolation a lot at work, wearing mask for a month now, really makes for an awesome time at work. Sarcasm implied. Can’t wait to go out for some thunder chickens tomorrow. I’ve had no time to shoot the bow but when I have I’ve been on, but haven’t had time so set up a blind or even scout for that matter, so 870 it is. I talked to the neighbor last week and he told me where he’s seen some birds. I have an idea on where they’ll roost and fly down. Best of luck to all you PA turkey hunters tomorrow.
