Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/15/20 06:44 PM

Check with Don Wolf.

Last weekend at the Oregon sale, the price was close to $80.00 per pound on good clean castor.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/15/20 06:46 PM

Don paid me 80 straight run.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/15/20 06:58 PM

Castor is a hot commodity right now,and rising in price. An extra $10 cd about for each beaver caught all in.$55/lb sounds quite low.

How many beavers does it take to make a pound?

Depends on size of beaver and time of year. Spring beaver doesn't take as many as fall/winter beaver, at least in the North

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/15/20 07:45 PM

It varies.I generally just count my castors to figure the avg.
Last year I sold 120 castors and recieved just under $1200 bucks.I forget what the weight was but I think at that time it was around 90/lb.
Thats Canuck dollars.

Not many good full castors here mostly shells had. 51 pounder was not impressed with the sacks.

Trevor Barnes will buy it at a fair price. Can't say exactly what he is offering today but I got 26 buck for 5 oz a few weeks ago. Look up Barnes hide and fur and call him.

Don’t want to spoil this thread but I heard from a good source of 300 pounds getting sold for $110 American dollars plus packing and shipping from Canada. So if you shop around you may get a better price. I also saw 7 pounds sold for $60 Canadian all grades in to a buyer. I guess it all depends on where you market your castor. Same goes for fur.

Just sold 4 pounds to Miller Fur for 75 $ a pound.

Looks like it pays to shop around. Huge differences in price

Was it dried?

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/15/20 10:21 PM

Dried four 4-5 days with fans running at 60-65 degrees. Then put in freezer.

Definitely not spoiling the thread sask, thanks.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/16/20 04:02 PM

One has to keep in mind that 300# perfectly dried, etc, is quite a prize for the larger buyer/exporter and therefore is worth more than 50-60 small-time deals with trappers where moisture levels likely need amended and so forth.

Thank you needed to know that detail on pricing

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/16/20 04:54 PM

Castor is $80-$85 a pound for well taken care of straight run semi dry castor. Straight higher grade would be more, shells less.

Get ready it is all going to be cheaper very quickly, just got the word today.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/16/20 05:51 PM

What's the opposite of price gouging called? When buyers pay less for a commodity due to panic?

I see no reason the price of castor would go down, beaver still need to be trapped regardless of the value of their pelt or lack thereof.

I don't suppose you'll share where you heard that, huh? Castor was about the only thing I was going to trap beaver for this spring, and if that market tanks, I'll let the vermin chew on more trees I guess.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/16/20 05:56 PM

Short selling. It's what's causing gold and silver to go down in price noem people need to get money now when gbd market is uncertain and they're got bills due yesterday.

The buyer I sold to said what he buys goes into facial cream type products. If you've seen any type of tv or radio add, you've seen this product.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/16/20 08:38 PM

Peej, my section of castor runs about 4-5 beaver to the lb. Colony beaver where the catch includes kits will be more like 8-10 beaver to the lb.

Everything else is tanking. Castor may follow.

Averaged $80/pound last weekend at the Idaho sale. I got $137 for a mere 24 ounces which comes to $91/pound. I believe the primary buyer at that sale goes by wallfur here on Tman if anyone wants to try to get ahold of him.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/17/20 07:45 PM

I am curious about that post because it sounded like he had some specific info.

After the last few days I would think that even buyers with solid orders are re-checking their buyers to make sure everything is green lights.

I feel for you guys that have your money out on the line waiting to see if the day to day situation helps or hurts. Must be hard for decision making when it comes to what you feel comfortable offering.

Straight run throughout the season, I figure about 7 beaver per pound

I sold 8 pounds about a month ago to a local buyer in Michigan for $70 straight run and there was a lot of junk.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/18/20 03:45 PM

Marty, if flights are restricted to where your markets are that may have an impact. Also the end user may be adjusting what they think they need if they're projecting a world wide economic slump coming on.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/18/20 04:01 PM

You read that wrong.

I was making light of someone not being able to see any reason that castor prices would be down.

Theres no sarcasm font.

The world is coming apart at the seams and anyone with any brains is taking precautions to survive.

Which includes not buying anything they dont need.

Big capital outlays seem a little risky right now.

But nooooo! The castor buyers are gouging.

Give me freaking break.

bch has probably bought more castor than most everyone on here has seen over all his years of fur buying.

I believe he was referring to not being able to get castor into the UK where a vast majority of it is sent. If they can't get it to the consumer they are not going to pay as much, same as furs.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/19/20 02:24 AM

Whats best way to ship castor?
Ups ground?
In cardboard box packed with paper?
Posted By: beaverpeeler

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/19/20 04:21 PM

For shipping semi-dry castor it needs to be protected by plastic or it can dampen the box. If that happens USPS will discard your shipment into the hazmat box and you most likely will have lost your shipment. It has happened to me.

Re: Castor Buyers? - 03/19/20 04:57 PM

I sure do feel like a idiot. I never knew castor was so valuable and really got taken advantage of by a local around my area. Guy seemed like a good guy. No wonder he kept asking for my castor. He would trade me a small bottle of lure which hasn't caught a turtle for it. I gave him the castor out of 18 beaver for 1 small bottle of lure and some some new 330 triggers.
