My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me.

My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me. - 03/29/20 04:40 AM

You'd think a manual 5 speed transmission with one rebuild should last longer than 676,000+ miles. But no, mine let me down. I had to have it towed to a transmission place here in town. They rebuilt it the last time it gave up the ghost at 500,000 miles. We'll see what the verdict is on Monday after they've examined it. I searched around and found I could buy a used one from a junk yard for around $850. It may be cheaper going that way rather than rebuilding the broke one.

500,000?!?! Impressive. Wonder how many miles my 435 has on it? Think it’s from 1980 or so, not sure of where it’s been..it’s in a 75 dodge 1 ton now.

Re: My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me. - 03/29/20 05:20 AM

If the one from the junk yard is a factory transmission that has not got alot of miles that would be the way to go instead of another rebuild imo

Mr. Paul you're killin me!!!
If you didnt drag around so many beaver in the poor truck all the time it would have lasted longer
Want some cheese to go with that whine? Oh, the whine is from the transmission? My bad........
May I suggest the “Transmission Breaker” cheese to go with the “Skeeter Pee”?

Think they did away with the 5 speed manual in the newer trucks and went with 6 speed so you better treat that truck well.Might be hard to learn to use an extra gear if you have to get new in the next few years.

Wouldn't think a manual would be that much to rebuild, some bearings and syncrose. Unless the case is damaged?

My wife's `99 Rav had 5th gear problems. Had 5th repaired a couple of times. Not too bad a job because everything that needs to be replaced can be done thru a maintenance access cover in the driver's side wheel well, but the repairs didn't last as long as the original parts. The transmission shop folks said they could not get gears that were properly hardened so they wore out sooner. Could be a good reason to go with a low mileage used transmission if you can find one.

WOW! 635,000 miles! Every time I hear of Paul's (and others) mileage on those Toyotas makes me think my next truck (this year) will be a Toyota!
That being said are the generation 3 as dependable as the previous 2 generations? Like to here some input!

Re: My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me. - 03/29/20 12:47 PM

I sold my 94 sr5 several years ago. It had 330k ish miles on it at the time. I pulled trailers so heave I had to put it in 4low to get it to move. I halled loads of 6 tons of scrap. 45mph max to the floor on flat ground. Hunting fishing trapping . I don't think another truck would have came close to holding up. I was young and didn know any better today for use like that I like a 3/4 ton or bigger.

How many tons of beaver were you halling when it went out on you?

I think a low mileage used transmission and new clutch kit would be the best option. Glad I'm not the only small Toyota truck fan..
That's a lot of miles on that truck. Impressive for sure.

Re: My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me. - 03/29/20 01:04 PM

Paul you are killing me, you run that truck forever like I am my T 100. They need fixing once in a while. I would go with the junk yard tranny if it has reasonable mileage on it. They only give 6 mos. warranty around here on rebuilds now.

Re: My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me. - 03/29/20 01:13 PM

Local junkyard here sold us a couple motors with 35,000 miles on them, my opinion is everything they sold had 35,000 miles on it. If you get what I am saying.

Re: My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me. - 03/29/20 01:13 PM

Paul, I vote for the junk yard tranny too. Used parts from the parts houses just don't compare to OEM stuff. I've got a 98 that is just approaching 200,000. Frame rotted out in the rear, so I cut it off behind the cab and built a new rear clip, added six inches inn length and built a flatbed for it. Worked out really well, and plan to build a topper for it this summer.. Always got too much going on to get things done to quickly!

Lee, mine had frame problems too, but I had a fella clean up the frame and strengthened it by welding plates where he cut out the rust. I heard now there are kits that can be welded on to the frame to strengthen them. I heard you can get kits that have the spring shackle hookups included.

Re: My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me. - 03/29/20 01:22 PM

Paul,
I had a 1996 5 speed truck. I would suggest if you can find a replacement transmission from a salvage yard that appears to be in good shape you consider this:
Use Amsoil gear lube, either standard or severe duty. Into every quart bottle mix one packet of moly assembly lube. Packets are small, squeeze into bottle and shake the heck out of it to help disperse the moly though out. The moly will eventually imbed itself into any porosity in the metal surfaces and slick everything up.
The Amsoil gear lube is probably the best gear lube on the market. The moly will help to reduce friction even more that the lube can. This is a proven method. That's why most of the oil manufacturers offer oil with moly of one type or another in the chemical formula.
This also works great in rear differentials, transfer case, and front differential. I know one speed shop that even put in in drag race motors years ago. Increased horsepower. Good luck.

Never use Dodge and breakdown in the same sentence it’s bad luck. LOL

The last rebuilt trans for my D50 was about a grand this place knows what the are doing and that was with the core. Going to a place that knows autos that might not be able to do a manual justice or know what to charge, just a waste of time and money find a place that knows the ins and outs of manuals.

The nice thing about just swapping out a used one is a manual is rather easy to swap out if you have some mechanical skills. Change out the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing when you have it apart.

Had same problem on frame with my 97 tacoma with 227000 weld shop plate it they done a few Toyota for me of the late 90 to 2000 over the years I sure didn't have a frame problem on my 97 T100 they must be built different

The original clutch was replaced at around 550,000 miles, so it should still be in good condition. Toyota shop did it with Toyota parts.

My second 92 is at 200,000 now. I cringe a little bit when I get in deep mud or snow. She just keeps purring along. I tried to get away from the old Toyota’s and came running back. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find another one when this one dies.

Nah, the only person I've been face to face with this past four days has been my wife. I've probably got one of the safest jobs out there as far as this virus goes. Just me and the beavers.

We've been designated as essential work personnel, so I get to keep chasing the beavers with all this mess going on.

One of our dealerships up here has replaced a ton of Toyota truck frames-at no charge to the owners-hard to believe but it is true.at least Toyota fixed the frame issue they knew was a problem-again free of charge.I have owned lots of Toyota trucks-especially the older ones. They sure took a beating when we were younger-amazed us over and over again.Great trucks!

I picked up a. shake in my yota this winter, when in 4wd that wasn't there before. Thought I'd better see what was up, so I shinned under it. The darn front drive shaft has a dent in it, right in the middle and you could see the run out in it when you turned it. Now I got a little lathe work for this summer too! Wonder when/where I slipped off something and hit a rock. Anything over thirty mph gets to shakin pretty good!

Paul I feel your grief its not good when your working truck goes down.these Toyota tacomas just keep going and are super dependent .I have had 5 in the last 45 years a 79,84 both stick shift and a 91,03,now a 2010 automatic I don't want to go back to stick shift. you gotta have the 4x4 low for the automatic trans to be any good to ya.i buy all used and look for deal all these trucks were good but the 2010 is best so far. I had frame problems also the o3 Toyota put a new frame under it springs, brake lines the whole bit no cost to me,my son got it now. good luck with the tranny may you be back on road soon

Re: My Tacoma's transmission went belly up on me. - 03/29/20 02:44 PM

MB, I got a recall on that and took it in. They inspected it and said It was good, then about ten years later, there wasn't nothing left of the rear, including the crossmembers. The rear crossmember I was able to rebuild, the front one that mounts the gas tank, was a total wipe out, so it had to be built from scratch. All it takes is time and new metal! I did a play by play on it up on the original fall coyotes thread on Chat a couple years ago. Don't know how to post the link though.

The guy just laughed when I told him how many miles are on it. He said it didn't qualify.

I got a recall on it for the frame, took it in, and it was fine. They gave me a 15 year warranty on the frame, and the rust showed up 6 months after that 15 year warranty expired.

That's some high mileage! I've got a '90 with the 22re and only 175k. Runs like a top and will go anywhere I need it to. I only hope I still have her at that kind of mileage.

Any part can be replaced or rebuilt, but rust kills a lot of good Toyotas here. Oil undercoating is the key to keeping them from rusting out. I spray it down with bar oil every fall, and at least once midwinter. Fluid film goes inside the doors, rockers, etc.

I got dad's 95 Tacoma after he passed. It had 36,000 miles on it when I got it, and when I sold it, it had 529,000+ miles on it.

Dad's is the green one. The silver one is the one I'm currently driving, well will be when transmission is fixed.

My old 2004 Canyon with 225,000 miles on it, has a 5 speed. The 3.5L 5 cylinder engine.
I replaced the clutch at 175,000 miles. Wasn't needed either.
I was under there and watched the shop pull it out.
They were surprised as much as me. New pressure plate, disc and throw-out bearing.
Flywheel was in great shape.
Not like the old days when my Chevy hit 100,00 it was junk.

My daughter and wife drive Honda Civics. We've had very good reliability from them. Our first one was a 96 hatchback. It went like a tank through the snow and got high-thirties mpg. My wife drove it for more than 400,000 miles then handed it down to our youngest daughter (oldest daughter already had her own Civic). The youngest daughter put another 150,000 miles on it (550,000+ total miles) before driving it to the junk yard a couple of years ago. It wouldn't pass another inspection because road salt rotted the frame/body. If not for rust we might still be driving it.

My wife drives a 2018 turbocharged Civic (six-speed manual). She won't me drive it unless she's with ever since I told her I want to try drifting with it.

At least with a manual transmission you usually know if something is going bad, most the time you aren't stranded
