Mowing Grass

Spring has sprung. The grass is growing. I had to put my employees to mowing. Hey, that rhymes.

So I moved the fence and put the sheep to work. Twenty-four hours and they are done. Nice thing about sheep as employees is we have never had a workman's comp claim. They usually make me more money than they cost. Hunger actually motivates them and to-date they have not had to call off because of a pandemic. Also, the one attempt they made at unionizing resulted in a BBQ and management has not had any problems since.

Truth be told, I don't have much of a yard to begin with so they can only make it better.

John that's a great way to support the green new deal. No petroleum products to pollute the atmosphere, recycle the droppings all is good. You will have to figure out the methane release to stay in compliance.

Bring that flock up here for a week. I have about 4 acres of fresh green growth they would really enjoy.

If I was younger, I would consider starting a right-of-way maintenance business and organic yard mowing with sheep. With all the pipe lines which have been put in here the past few years I think the business would have potential. Right-of-way grazing would be like a range operation, just in a straight line.

One way to do it

Fresh snow the last 4 mornings. It melts in the afternoons and then snows again at night. I believe I am ready for spring.
I like the right of way idea but would use a mix of goats and sheep. The goats are better at getting rid of the wordier browse.

For sure on the mix of sheep and goats. Most of the research I have done on the idea seems to indicate they use large groups of wethers. It is an idea that really fascinates me and I have read of some people doing pretty well with contract grazing. There are many situations anymore where landowners should be paying farmers for their service. We went to Switzerland summer before last and I was impressed with the careful use of every little piece of land for grazing and hay production. In America we have a great deal of abundance. However, we could do so much better both for the environment and to further create an abundance of heathy food. (Ok, I am a bit of a hippie.)
