nm trappers test - 04/05/20 03:25 PM

For those who plan on trapping in NM from now on, below is the link to the NM trappers ed course that is mandatory for everyone who wants to trap in NM. Warning: it is about 2 hours long and about 20 section tests. Now is a good time to complete the test with all of the shutdowns. The course and tests are free.

Also per G&F website http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/hunting/information-by-animal/furbearers/ [b]"NMDGF offers 3 different furbearer education courses: the comprehensive furbearer trapping and hunting New Mexico Trapper Education Course, the New Mexico-specific New Mexico Furbearer Law and Species Identification Course, and the furbearer hunting-specific New Mexico Furbearer Hunting Course. How do you know which course you are required to take?

[b]If you plan on trapping and have never taken a trapper education course, you are required to take only the New Mexico Trapper Education Course.
If you plan on trapping and have already completed a trapper education course offered through a different venue, you are required to take only the New Mexico Furbearer Law and Species ID Course.
If you plan on only hunting furbearers (you will not be setting traps or snares), you are required to complete any one of the 3 furbearer education courses

Completion of a trapper education program provided by a state wildlife agency outside of New Mexico will partially satisfy the education requirements needed to set a trap or snare in New Mexico. Completion of a trapper education course through another entity, such as AFWA’s “North American Basic Trapper Course” or the Fur Takers of America’s “Trapper College”, may also partially satisfy the education requirements; contact the NMDGF Trapper Education Program at 505-476-8038 to confirm.

Anyone who has completed a trapper education course in another state will need to:

Provide proof of completion of the course either in person or by email. When purchasing their New Mexico Trapper License, they will need to enter their Trapper Education number from their certificate provided by that state.
Complete the New Mexico Furbearer Laws and Species Identification course (click here). A required quiz on these course materials can be found using the NMDGF Online Licensing website."

So the conservationlearning is the New Mexico trapping education course? And if so that's all I need?

Re: nm trappers test - 04/06/20 12:33 AM

You need that plus hunting license and trapping license and I think there is a permit for state or federal land. It’s in the course and on one of the quizzes

I did the conservationlearning, the one the state had listed before this new information came out. Nothing about NM laws

I noticed those 2 were different too but I did them anyway. I just kept going till I could print the certificate. All I have to do now is make time to get out to New Mexico during our long deer season to use it. Since I have it though I guess I’ll go ahead and join they’re state trapping association.

Koss2005 will need to take the NM Law and Species ID courses to comply with the legal requirements. The AFWA course counts the same as an out of state course. I have contacted the NM Furbearer biologist about removing that link on the furbearer page and having everyone go to the education tab to avoid this type of confusion. New for everyone so will take a while to work the kinks out.

We might have a course at the NMTA meet in Alto July 31-Aug 1

Re: nm trappers test - 04/07/20 08:05 PM

I finally figured it out. A few months ago NM game and fish had a site you could go to, conservation learning, and take a course and they would except it as your trappers ed, I did that. Now we have a New Mexico specific test also with conservation learning and that's where the confusion came from.

Any way I have my 10 digit code and my certificate of completion. Now I just need to save my money for a back pack to start carrying around all the paperwork they require trapping license, my code for my trappers license, written permission and lion tags, lol

Thanks for posting Adam, I’ll check it out. Maybe I’ll trap out there someday.

Kansas and Illinois have decent free courses also, Delaware will accept either as valid trapper education online courses.

You're welceome DelawareRob. I hope you can too. Thanks for posting that link and information.

Everyone, NMG&F just emailed me to enter my Customer ID Number (CIN) in another place in the course. There are 2 places that your CIN must be entered so that your certification includes your CIN and the NM G&F system transfers your certification number into their system.

1 Place is in the testing area
The other is in the profile. I missed the profile area somehow. It doesn't affect you but your certification will not have your CIN without that. If you missed entering your CIN in both places NM G&F will email you to get that information updated. The area in the profile is towards the bottom and easy to miss.

I hope this helps those who have completed it already, and who are planning on completing it now or in the future
