Ash firewood. What’s it worth?

Ash firewood. What’s it worth? - 04/22/20 03:56 PM

I had to cut down a couple of ash trees. Does anyone have a fair idea what these might be worth? I know they would be worth more split but I don’t even own a splitting maul. I would say the pile measures over 8 ft long and 5 1/2 ft high with cut lengths around 14-18 in.

$65.00 bucks near any good sized city.

$45.00 worth of wood in any rural area.

IMO.

Would be worth more if they were cut a consistent length

around here only what your labor is worth to some one for having you split and stack it for them. there is so much ash coming down most people want to give it away free for the hauling.

had a guy down the street form me knock on my door the other day , he has an ash that needs to come down , did I want the wood. sure I guess I could use a little more load it on trailer drive it one block split and put it on my pile

in the form it is in , where I live you would be lucky to get 10 dollars Everyone is giving it away cut in inconsistent lengths of about 14-18 if you split and delivered it 50

very much a supply demand cost of labor for your area.

When I was burning wood, ash was my favorite wood to burn. It split easily and even partially green it would burn. It also burns longer then most wood, leaves little ash, and is easy to get started burning. The smoke has a nice aroma.

For one pile of wood that's not split, in late April, just be glad if someone will come take it so you don't have to clean it up.

This is what I was thinking. Put a free sign on it and hope you dont have to help someone load it up.

While ash is easier to cut and split it's one of my least preferred firewoods. Dosent seem to have the BTUs of oak or maple. I rate ash as better than gum or hackberry. About on par with elm and cherry. Hickory is slightly better but I'd never burn hickory in anything other than a bbq pit.

Heck, if you drop it, it splits. A simple axe is all that is required to split Ash. I split 2 cords of ash this year and bought another cord of Oak/hickory/maple. You hardly work up a sweat splitting ash. I use a Fiskers splitting axe, and it is a real pleasure when I get a load of ash.

If I saw that on the Metro Craigslist, I'd expect to see $100. And, this time of year, I'd expect it to stay there for a good long time.

I don't know what if might bring in your area, but, it is worth something. Maybe consider a trade for something you could use. Splitting maul, maybe.

If these oil prices stay where they're at until next winter, I'm thinking selling firewood gonna not be so good...

I don't care how easy ash splits, its a whole lot easier to just turn the thermostat up and probably end up being cheaper.

Ash splits easy and makes good kindling wood. Also good to get a fire hot quick. Not the BTUs or burn time of hardwoods,,but a very nice wood to mix in with the others.

If the country doesn't get back to work by fall people might have to burn more wood.

Yep, just cut and split a cord of ash last week. After splitting a cord of stringy elm and cottonwood I had forgotten how relaxing splitting wood was.

My guess is you'll be giving it away for free unless you split and dry it.

So much ash around here most everything gets passed on and is waste. No reason to split and stack and do all that work for the great big trees when there are as many 9" round trees a guy could want that just need lopped up into pieces. Makes good fire wood though. Supply and demand... and its easy to find right now.

Re: Ash firewood. What’s it worth? - 04/23/20 11:10 AM

My woods was about half Ash. I have been cutting for three years and have about three more to go. If I put it at the road for free, someone will take it. Put a price on it and it will not leave. There is more dead Ash around here then you can imagine. Two days ago I was working by my shed and need a tool. Went in the barn and came back and a Ash had fallen not ten feet from where I was standing. Winds have been blowing hard here.

Re: Ash firewood. What’s it worth? - 04/23/20 11:21 AM

Ash is easy peasy to split. Lots of it available around here though, that little green ash borer moved in and will do its share of ash tree killing. Projection is for no more ash trees in several years left alive. But we have lots of other great hardwoods around here. Oak, maple, cottonwood, and walnut all grow like weeds. Most wood burners or weekend campfire folks around here wont know difference or pay a premium for ash over any of those other good dried and seasoned hardwoods that I am aware of.

Put a sign on it: "Private Wood. Please do not take."

Someone will come by during the night and take it and you will be all set!

They'll probably take the sign and leave the wood.

I'm a bit envious of any true hardwood, especially if it was easy to get. We burn mostly white spruce, birch, aspen in that order. Ash, oak, maple, etc. sound great.

My wifes grandmother liked to burn ash in her wood burning cook stove, it burned well but not to hot unlike hickory.

Re: Ash firewood. What’s it worth? - 04/25/20 07:49 PM

I like ash, it split easily and I think it burns well. The ash bug is killing all my ash trees and is primarily what I have been burning for two years. I have a year or two to go. That would not require splitting to go into in my outdoor boilers 48"×36" fire box with 24x24" door.

My guess Is you may end up giving it away. If someone would give $20 take it. You can always ask more and see what happens.

People are fickle example: my wife had had no one show interest when we were giving away our manix kittens. I told her to put $50 on them and they sold in less than week. You would be surprised what works.
