I got the plans from Noah’s marine. Not much to the plans. It’s really not that hard of a project. I’m actually not much of a wood worker myself, it just interested me. Thanks for all the comments, it’s exciting to see the canoe take shape after each piece is glued in. Most plans call for stapling the strips on. Stapling them on allows you to move faster, but I knew I would like all the leftover staple holes in the finished product, so instead I’m just using wood glue.

There won’t be any ribs. They say finished weight is around 50lbs

Re: My covid project - 04/30/20 02:33 PM

I've always used staples, and you're correct in that it speeds things up considerably. When the hull is completely stripped and you're ready to start sanding, takes a couple of evenings to pill all the staples and jam toothpicks into the thousands of staple holes and break them off. You never see the holes or the "filler".

That's way cool that you started with telephone poles.

Your stripping looks great! They are a fun project. Good on you!

Just goes to show you how inexperienced I am at wood working lol. Never gave it a thought to do tooth picks and wood filler. Thanks for all the kind words fellas. I will definitely post some progress pictures and on the water finished!

Yessir!

I probably have two full weekends, 12 hours a day just in milling all the wood, getting it to size, and routering both edges. But that was for three of us, and wood for each of use. I’m just the ginny pig.

Re: My covid project - 05/01/20 01:02 AM

Beautiful work!
Is that white cedar?
I would have never thought you could bend cedar like that.
I know you said from old power poles, so obviously not green wood, so are you pre -soaking to get strips to bend without breaking?

Nope. They are 3/4 x 1/4” thick strips. They bend way easy! Only soaking I did was to bend the stems on both ends of the boat. I believe it is mostly all western red cedar, can’t be sure cause they came from various power poles. The darker wood in the middle is redwood reclaim from a wastewater treatment plant back in the 60’s that I got from my uncle.

What kind of joint do you use where the strips come together? Is it just a butt joint or is it a half lap or what? What kind of glue are you using? Is it the same joint on the ends as on the sides of the stripping?

It is called a bead and cove for the joints. All I have used for the glue up so far is tite bond 3. There is no joint at the end. You have have to shape the inside stem so the strips lay flat to it like this

[Linked Image]

Yea I do have access to a woodmizer, planer, and router. They all got a good workout for this project! Thank you for all the comments. It’s been really fun watching it come to life. And I’m glad the planking is over!

I really like it. The bead and cove joint looks like it will work well. Plenty of surface area considering. I would have never thought to use a telephone pole as lumber. Seems like a good idea I would assume it would last a long time. Any idea how much it weighs? I assume the plywood in the pictures is for forming? Finally, is there an end cap or rib that covers the slats on the end on the outside?

Re: My covid project - 05/12/20 12:42 AM

Yes there are end caps. I just haven’t got to that point yet. I just started the fit them and have them ready to be glued in.

The plans say that it will be 55 - 60lbs. We shall see!

Looks like that end cap is steam bent? Were the ribs also steam bent? Will there be a "cap" that runs the entire center seam also? I would be afaid of catching the end cap on something and damaging it without a piece that ran the seam. Sorry for all the questions but you have really got my interest in case you didn't notice. grin

Re: My covid project - 05/13/20 11:10 AM

I did steam bend the stems. They are 3 pieces of 3/4 x 1/4 ash laminated together. First I stem bend both inner and out strips, let them dry then came back and did a glue up of the inner and outer stems separating them with tape. Also they are no ribs in the canoe, it will be fiberglassed and varnished in the end for strength. Here’s a couple pics of the stem bending process

It was really rough on the lake for a canoe, probably around 1ft waves and windy, so I really couldn’t get a good feel for how stable it is. I don’t know we paddled into the wind with ease. I think it will be a fast boat for sure. A difference between that and my regular aluminum canoe!
