WOW! I have made upwards of a thousand ulu in my day, most in a traditional Inuit pattern, and nothing that large. That is really impressive! Now that I have all my body parts relatively intact, and can actually work in my shop again, I might have to give something like that a try.
Moosetrot
that was very slick looking , looks like a carbon steel knife maybe made locally out of circular saw blades.

I worked at Monforts for a season and it was mostly illegals, some of the hardest working folks and very dedicated and skilled at what they did.

BillyTraps moosetrot builds them so he mentioned then I'd suggest getting New house 114 to fit a ivory handle on it .

Re: Mexican ulu use - 05/05/20 10:31 AM
Very slick uluk work.
Some trivia: In Newfoundland at the height of the seal fishery there was actually a seal skinners union. Hundreds of thousands of harp seal skins had to be processed with uluit (remove fat from the skins) in a very short period of time late March and early April each year. Some of those people had to be pretty slick too as it was piece work.
Uluk is the original Inuktitut name but it has been chopped to ulu; uluit is plural. Uluk is pronounced to an English speaker: Ou look

Very impressive! That's not his first one. Lol
Only a couple minor things I saw that we do differently but then it takes us ten times longer.

I think I'd want a guard on my arm

Re: Mexican ulu use - 05/21/20 01:44 AM
The design of those curved blades along with the power one can generate due to the placement of the handle is pure genius. These are slightly modified stone age tools.
If you have never used one, you need to get one. I use a smaller one for beaver, otter and old grizzle backed coons. They are sweet!
looking at these I think that if using a hand saw blade were it is tallest near the handle , I have another old saw blade I might have to try this

Re: Mexican ulu use - 05/22/20 03:05 AM
I have seen several videos of people using that knife skinning hogs. While I am not dreaming that I could do anything near that, I want to find one of those knives. In every video I have seen the knives look identical, so somebody must be supplying them. Any idea would be appreciated!
