The Belviney is pretty smooth scotch. Never have tried their $260/fifth stuff, probably couldn’t tell the difference anyway.

Both of these as one of them is the same mash bill as Pappy Van Winkle they just age it longer and in a different part of the rickhouse. My all time favorite to sip over one large cube is Talisker.

Re: Sipping Whiskey - 05/05/20 11:47 AM

evan williams white label is my go to

i also have on hand van winkle family reserve, whistle pig 10 yr, sazerac rye, buffalo trace, blantons, and henry mckenna 10 yr.
its hard to pick a favorite, but I'm partial to rye and whistle pig and sazerac are both very good.

Re: Sipping Whiskey - 05/05/20 11:51 AM

Makers Mark 46 is very good, but for everyday house bourbon you can't hardly beat Evan Williams. Both the Black and the Rye are excellent and reasonably priced.

Crown peach, Pendleton and gentlemen Jack are my favorites.

Re: Sipping Whiskey - 05/05/20 11:55 AM

Knob Creek Single Barrel Select Bourbon. At 120 proof you had better sip it and not drink it. If packing into the backwoods that's the one I take. I like the regular Knob Creek Bourbon too, and Woodford Reserve if I want something smooth and buttery. Evan Williams is good too. I don't partake of bourbon very often any more, but when I do I pick from those.

When Im just having A drink... Knob Creek Rye. When its the end of the night and im fixing to get a good buzz rolling Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is tough to beat. Costs a bit more but 4-6 ounces will have you cross eyed @ 136.8 proof.

Re: Sipping Whiskey - 05/05/20 08:44 PM

I like 1792, Elijah Craig, Knob Creek's 120 proof and their smoked maple flavor. Woodford Reserve and Gentleman Jack. Crown Royal peach is good, and the cheaper variety Jim Beam Vanilla, Jim Beam Black and Jim Beam Devils cut. Also like Wild Turkey's American Honey.

Heaven’s Door either the Tennessee Bourbon or Double Barrel! Both are excellent sipping drinks. Over ice and oh so yummy!

Re: Sipping Whiskey - 05/06/20 01:44 AM

Before I quit, Evan Williams was my my go to bourbon.

The higher end bourbon was great but my favorite was easily Evan Williams out of a Styrofoam cup (or later a knock off Yeti).

What's the difference between bourbon and whiskey?

All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon.

“Bourbon needs to be produced in America and made from 51 percent corn, and whiskey does not,” says Maker’s Mark Master Distiller Greg Davis. Bourbon also needs to be stored in new charred-oak barrels, whereas whiskey barrels do need to be oak but not new or charred. “Lastly, to be called bourbon, the liquid needs to be distilled to no more than 160 proof and entered into the barrel at 125.” For other whiskies the liquid must be distilled to no more than 190 proof. David notes that this isn’t just common practice—”it’s actual bourbon law.”
