What's your favorite apple for eating?
After tasting many apples, I chose Pink Lady. It's fairly sweet, crunchy, with a slight tartness.

Hard to pick a favorite since most are so good with different great qualities. Freshness is key though. Many apples from the store taste terrible. I am lucky that my house is surrounded by orchards for several miles. I enjoy them all except Red Delicous. Those are terrible.

There are many newer varieties that win most of the blind taste tests they have. (Yes, they have blind taste tests for apples run by ag research folks). I like many of the older varieties, Cox's Orange pippin, Spitzenberg, Gravenstein, Arkansas black, but have also been very impressed with newer ones like 'Honeycrisp' and 'Fuji'.

I think this needs to be early , mid and late season it changes every couple of weeks through the season.

early gold and Zestar stand out as early season apples I like

Mid season , cortland has long been a favorite but it can be better or worse with the year sun crisp and snow were also good last year mid season

my favorite late season apple is Arlett , Ida red and ever crisp were also good last year.

Re: Favorite Eating Apple - 05/06/20 05:37 PM

One that is probably long gone. My Aunt Mildred had a tree she called a winesap medium to large slightly flattened and lopsided apples dark red with a rusty russet. Hard crisp, sweet tart, somewhat dry with red veining at the core. Made the best dried apples for fried pies and a wonderful fine grained and thick apple butter. She made it in a copper pot in the yard over a fire. Last tasted in 1983.

Macintosh fresh picked from the orchards in the Schoharie Valley. Macs need to be fresh. From a grocery store Ganny Smith. Crisp and tart bordering on sour. Generally speaking apples from big box stores suck.

The old varieties of Red Delicious were good. The new ones are almost inedible. I like Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, and Fuji in that order. The locally grown Golden Ds are sweet, crisp, and juicy. I would suspect the grocery store ones are pretty poor.

Early season - Ginger Crisp
mid season - Gala's or honey crisp
late season - Johnny Gold (Also great for keeping long term)

Red delicious if you can get them fresh. By far the best eating apple but few people have ever had one that wasn't ruined on the way to a store.

Re: Favorite Eating Apple - 05/07/20 02:25 AM

Whinesap. A neighbor had one in their horse pasture when I was a kid. That tree must have liked the natural fertilizer because those apples were so big you couldn't hardly bite them without bloodying up your mouth. I had always thought that the red streaks were my blood.

I had 40 acres of red delicious behind my house for 15 years. Not once did I ever finish eating one even fresh picked off the tree. Grainy and bland. YUCK!

Sorry BernieB, but I will have to agree with Michigan on this one. Won't even argue about it.
There is a good reason they are cutting them all down in Washington and replacing them with better apples.

I have always thought that "delicious" in the name was a true misnomer for red delicious apples. They are barely edible.

Yellow gala, honeycrisp, golden delicious are my favorites red galas are good too

Re: Favorite Eating Apple - 05/07/20 10:57 AM

Red delicious is a misnomer, they are the least "apple" tasting apple there is. Bland, bland, bland and too mushy for a decent pie too.
I'm a Fuji fan, and gala a close second.

2. Pink Lady
3. Fuji

Re: Favorite Eating Apple - 05/07/20 04:21 PM

I've tried honeycrisp. They're OK, but IMO, very over priced compared to other apples I like just as well. Pink Lady (my favorite) is comparable, but almost half the price in my area.

Re: Favorite Eating Apple - 05/07/20 04:25 PM

Grimes Golden gets my vote over yellow/golden delicious.

Re: Favorite Eating Apple - 05/07/20 04:30 PM

I like Honeycrisp mostly for the fact that it has opened the eyes of many that there's far better apples then the trio of red delicious, yellow delicious and granny smith.

BTW, granny smith is a far better apple if left to hang on the tree as long as possible.
