Any suggestions for hiking/work boot?

Any suggestions for hiking/work boot? - 05/17/20 02:36 AM

Hello. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good boot? I have been working in hiking boots for several years and like them for: light weight, waterproof, comfort, a little protection, and slight height. I have gone through Keen, Merrill and they last a couple years and then fall apart. I wouldn't be against a more expensive pair if they lasted longer and were more comfortable. Thank you for your time.

I'll be following this thread too. The most comfortable pair of boots I've ever worn were a pair of Ariat work boots, unfortunately the soles fell off at just over a year. On a pair of Irish Setter work boots now and they're not as comfortable, but they're not bad.... only 5 months in on them so far.

I'm really hard on shoes and boots as well. I have good luck with stitched sole, all leather boots, anything else is trashed in a year. I been wearing blundstones in the boat shop for years, need something slip off for getting in finished boats. They are light as sneakers and wear like iron. Worn the treads off one pair and now wear them around the place, second pair is a couple years old and just broken in.

For hiking/bird hunting boots I've worn Danner lights for a long time. Got 8 or 9 years out of my first pair, could still be wearing them if I got resoled. 4 years on current pair going strong and I hunt my butt off in them following my dog. Not cheap, but cheaper in the long run than buying $100 boots every 1-2 years.

They're not lightweight, and they're not inexpensive, but the best boots you'll ever wear are custom-made.

Check out Nick's Custom Boots:

I put mine on first thing in the morning, and take them off just before bed each night. I love them.

Not sure how they will hold up in long run, but my son is wear a pair wood land fire fighting boots.. He likes them so far and I guess we'll see how they hold up. I'm not sure of the brand but I know they were not cheap.

For hiking, I wear LaCrosse rubber knee boots. You'd be surprised how many less ticks you get

I've been wearing Timberland Pro for several years. The pair I'm wearing now are almost 2 year's old. They are comfortable right out of the box. They aren't cheap but if you think about it if work 8 to 10 hours a day it's probably the boot that you wear the most.

Equally as important as the build is the fit. Had that explained to me by a custom boot maker years ago. The last the boot is shaped on should be the same shape as your foot. Otherwise it will never fit right.

Red Wing 953 fits the shape of my foot. Not many others do.

He also said I had been fitted to wrong length my entire life. I was wearing size 11. He put me in a 12 to 13, depending on last. My foot problems went away.

Irishsetters are so good you don't even have to break them in.
