Rhubarb For Poison Ivy

Rhubarb For Poison Ivy - 05/19/20 03:34 PM

My wife showed me something this woman had posted on Facebook. She claims rhubarb is very effective for treating poison ivy.
You squeeze the juice out of the stalk and apply it directly to the infected area. She said you will see the remedy working within 24 hours and it relieves the itching almost right away.

Would save the rhubarb for pies and use jewelweed for the ivy .

I struggled with constant poison ivy in the summer time my entire youth. Heard a bunch of different remedies but never rhubarb. The older I get the less susceptible I have gotten so I don't worry much anymore. An yes rhubarb pie is hard to beat!

Sounds like my situation when I was a kid. I even caught it a couple times in the winter when there was snow on the ground! I haven't had it in years since I've gotten older, though.

Trouble is some cretin ruined rhubarb pie by putting strawberries in it. Complete blasphemy.

lots of truth in this thread. Mostly about pie, strawberries and jewelweed.

The only surefire poison ivy cure I have ever found is to not come into contact with any in the first place.

Reminds me of the time we rubbed poison ivy leaves on the toilet paper in the outhouse at work...

Physician boy scout leader over at Mediapolis Ia used to make his guys eat a poison ivy leaf.
I have heard from one of the scouts tat they never got poison ivy.
I sure don't recommend doing that but it apparently worked for them .
My wife used white shoe polish.

I like rhubarb pie, but prefer strawberry pie that my daughter makes for my birthday. But, not the two together.

I will stick to spaying brake cleaner on it.... it burns, but it clears it up.

What is this poison ivy you speak of?

Never got it but I have some friends that get it if they are down wind of it on beezy day.

A product called Oral Ivy, put a few drops in orange juice or water every morning to build a natural immunity.

I wonder what the solvent is in white shoe polish is. The old timey Ivy Dry which came in a brown glass bottle similar to what Hoppes #9 gun cleaner comes in really worked on real bad cases of poison ivy. I wouldn't be surprised if all three of them have the same solvent in them. I haven't tried Hoppes #9 yet though.

I'm thinking the shoe polish just dries it up.

Ow! I'd be careful with that. A friend of mine years ago tried putting gasoline on it and ended up with blood poisoning. But, if you've used brake cleaner without any adverse effects, it might be OK.

I did the same thing yrs ago when I'd get it horrible. I don't advise it to anyone but it DOES work. Will make choice words slip out of your mouth while ya run in place. Burns

I don't catch it but bleach will dry it up and stop the itching as well

The dish soap and wash cloth method is for when you’ve been in it and don’t have it yet. It gets the oils off before you break out.

My dad always washed with white gas.
Vinegar and bleach bath for me ,then treat itch with raw Jewelweed.
Some people boil down Jewelweed to concentrate.
Then freeze in ice cube tray and store in freezer bags to rub it on year round.
Don't do that myself ( afraid of kids eating the ice cubes ) .

That is exactly what the old timey Ivy Dry does. In will shrivel up 2nd degree blisters in a days time with repeated applications. It is wonderful! It must be some kind of common solvent. It stinks and stains real bad.

Re: Rhubarb For Poison Ivy - 05/21/20 12:57 PM

FYI the most common active ingredient in break cleaner is Triclor. Thats the stuff they stopped using everywhere b/c its sure to cause cancer. Ever watch the move Civil Action? Its a good flick and talks about triclor some.
