His physical condition depends on his age but it looks like he could stand to lose a bit. Looks like he needs more exercise.

" He's NOT overweight.... he just has a hormone problem, not to mention mental stress!!!! " Now leave him alone before you damage his ego even more.

10 lbs easier to get it off him now before he has back and joint trouble.best way is no human food PERIOD . Had a bassettt got up to 71 lbs worked at it got her down to 60 . She lived to be 14 with out many joint issues . Kidneys gave out what took her.

Nice looking dog. Is he a hunting dog or a couch dog? Is that a sore on his upper left front leg?

Most likely a callus where the hair has been rubbed off from lying on that elbow. My older labs get them a lot.

He carries it well

Friend of mine had a black lab chunkier than your dog. Lazy couch potato.

He called it a ' flabador ' ......lol

Re: How Overweight - 05/23/20 05:42 PM

that is one good looking dog. If I lived up north I would want some fat on him to deal with that cold water and cold temps while hunting

Yup.

Re: How Overweight - 05/23/20 06:01 PM

I think the more important question is does he have a good personality?

Re: How Overweight - 05/23/20 06:32 PM

He is overweight. Nice looking dog too.
Not over by a large amount but one ought to see a tiny bit if a V taper. The majority if people keep their dogs too fat.
Go stand in a Wal Mart line for 30 minutes waiting to get in the store. That is how it is up here. Watch the people coming and going
and you will quickly see why most people have overweight dogs.

Extra weight is not good for dogs or people. With dogs it is hard on everything but especially their joints. You have to watch a Labs weight like a hawk as they will eat everything and anything in sight if they have the opportunity.

Guessing 6-8 years old and could stand to lose a little weight, especially if he’s a working dog. Nice looking dog though. Doesn’t appear to have any hip or joint issues based on his sitting appearance...straight and not off to one side or the other. Should see some grey in the muzzle over the next year or so. Less weight and they live longer too.

Daggone!! He must be looking rough. lol

He’s 2, not a hunting dog (Although my daughters bf is an avid duck hunter and says the dog will be soon enough) He loves the trapline. Typical Lab in that he will give chase to anything that comes in the yard that has feathers or fur and forget about fishing when he’s with you.

Re: How Overweight - 05/23/20 09:25 PM

Here’s a 2 year old, lol. I was basing it off his size. If 2, then yeah, he needs to lose some weight! We keep working dogs lean! Regular dog food during the Spring/Summer and Pro Plan during Fall/Winter. Could just be she’s feeding him the good stuff all year. If they aren’t getting the exercise they will bulk up quick!

Re: How Overweight - 05/23/20 09:32 PM

He’s a small lab, only about 90 lbs. He’s suppose to lose 10lbs by Nov. according to the vet.

Re: How Overweight - 05/23/20 09:35 PM

He small? At 90?? The dog picture is between 70-73 and will lose weight during duck season and get down to about 62-65.

Very nice looking dog. Working dogs are to be considered athletes.

Re: How Overweight - 05/23/20 10:06 PM

I think at 2 years old that dog is overweight. My 11 yr old lab weighs 72 and the vet thinks she is a perfect weight. Slim dogs live longer. Beautiful dog WannaBe.

He's just "big boned".....yea, right.
The picture of him sitting really shows he's overweight, how much I don't know.

Re: How Overweight - 05/23/20 10:25 PM

A proper-sized male lab should weigh around seventy pounds. I don't know why breeders started opting for bigger and bigger labs. My daughter's lab weighed about 110 most of his life and lived to be thirteen with no irregular joint issues. He wasn't fat, just a huge lab.

My current lab is closer to the breed standard in size and weight. He's very active too. He swims almost every day from early spring to late fall.

Swims with my granddaughter every chance he gets.

Two Hardy's biscuits. (That's per day)

Re: How Overweight - 05/24/20 02:49 AM

Isn't over weight a relative term? The reason I say that is compared to me the dog needs a daggum cheeseburger.
