Do people post used items in the trap shed for the same or higher prices than the manufacturers sell them for? I clicked on 2 items in the shed I was interested in... one was used traps that were a few dollars less than new, but once you figured in shipping from them vs from a dealer, they were more expensive than new! The other was an accessory. $xxx PLUS shipping. I was like wait, that seems high so went and checked.... yep, $1 more than brand new from the manufacturer.

I mean it's a free country and they can sell them for what they want, but are people actually dumb enough to pay higher than new prices for used goods?!?

To answer your last question. Yes people will pay more without checking around.

Supply and demand, sold a lot of my stuff at a loss. Look at ebay, shipping is usually as much as the item itself. Not what it use to be...

Selling your used stuff for a loss is normal. I get paying more for an item if it's not available. But I could literally buy both items I looked at today, from F&T and direct from the manufacturer, brand new, for less than what they were asking for used items.

If you offer less in a PM than asking price, some people get offended. Most dont and if I want something that I think is too pricey I offer what I am willing to pay.

I have and would do that if it was something unique, but not for something I can buy brand new from the man that makes them.

Re: Why? - 05/26/20 06:58 PM

1--they bought them used and don't know what new ones go for
2--becuz they can
3--they don't have 8-10 catalogs on their desk to check, like most of us do.
4--they were given the traps free and "someone told" them what they were worth.
5--they don't want to take a loss if any

I'll stop there Angela

but people are people and there's a myriad of reasons actually

Well maybe they are broke in and have weaker springs and are personalized just for you. They figure with that sore leg you won't be able to slap it on your thigh and set as usual. And it takes time and trouble to get them broke in and are charging extra for it.

I'm just pulling your leg (no pun intended). I wish you a full and speedy recovery. And it sounds like you are already preparing for better times.

Hey now! It's my left leg that's hurt. I can still set a #11 as fast as any of ya over my right leg, lol.

Common sense should be common but...

Some of the new stuff is not worth what you have to pay for, some of the old stuff is much better. JMO

Angela, you are not taking into account that the traps are 'experienced'. That surely makes them more expensive. What were you thinking, girl? wink

Prayers continue here,

I would agree with you about that.
I have overpaid for guns at auction just because I percieved that the other bidder didn't deserve to own them.

Yep only about 30% are good deals and sometimes you can get a great deal.

My favorite that seems to happen a lot is every month fnt has new specials and you'll find someone selling new or used for a higher price than fit's special .

In Mason City I sat at a booth with a dealer buddy, and sold used Duke 220's for three dollars a dozen more than he was asking for new ones. I sold 8 dozen and he didn't sell any new ones. They never ask him the price of his, they went right to the used ones.

That's one thing (I guess) but if people are on this forum than they have the ability to look up prices of new items, I mean they're literally links on every page . I don't know exactly what all trapping stuff cost but for what I want I do for the most part but if not I'm like 4 or 5 clicks away from the answer. Don't get me wrong I'm a capitalist, get what you can but as a consumer you think people would take the few seconds and see what stuff cost new.

Re: Why? - 05/27/20 09:38 AM

I was bidding on a camper at an estate auction probably 20 years ago. I got to the price I didnt want to go past and quit bidding. Let the woman bidding against me have it. That woman got upset and I discovered she was a family member running the bid up. They then offered the camper to me at my last bid. I countered with the price I was at when the woman jumped in. I don't know what they did with it in the end.

I always check new price before buying something used. I wont pay much over half of new price most of the time. If your buying a used car you want to check prices. The salesman makes his living getting people to pay more than they should.

I figure if somebody can get new price for something used then good for them.

I have seen this phenomenon with non- trapping stuff. The bone I have with used traps is that they're half wore out, though they are exceptions to the rule.

It has to something special if I go over 1/2 of new cost on a used item. But I reckon John was on the right track as to why folks overprice stuff

May be some that divide by 1/2 instead of multiplying by 1/2 when setting the price.

Yeah it amazes me: auctions, homes, craigslist, cars, and trap shed.

Most of the stuff I buy isn't being made anymore so who knows what the retail price is?
