Chief Justice John Roberts Sides with Liberal Justices as Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Restrictions on Religious Services

The Supreme Court on Friday night ruled in favor of coronavirus restrictions on religious services in California in a 5-4 decision.
Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the four liberal justices to side with California’s legal argument that they had the right to shut down or limit religious services.
The decision came as thousands of protesters around the country gathered to protest the death of George Floyd, after a police officer in Minneapolis subdued him by kneeling on his neck for several minutes.
Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. Alito Jr., Neil M. Gorsuch, and Brett M. Kavanaugh voted against.
In his dissent, Kavanaugh argued that “comparable secular businesses” such as supermarkets, stores, hair salons, and marijuana dispensaries were not subject to the same restrictions as churches.
“The church and its congregants simply want to be treated equally to comparable secular businesses,” Kavanaugh wrote. “California already trusts its residents and any number of businesses to adhere to proper social distancing and hygiene practices.”
The case was brought to the Supreme Court by the South Bay United Pentecostal Church in Chula Vista, Ca
California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered that in-church gatherings can only reach 25 percent of capacity and under 100 people.
President Trump last week demanded that all religious services be considered “essential services” during the coronavirus pandemic, just as liquor stores and grocery stores are.
Roberts’ decision to side with the liberals marks a stark contrast with judicial precedence to side with religious liberty enshrined in the Constitution.

If the churches were treated exactly the same as other businesses, 25% capacity, I can see it.
If they're singled out, bad ruling.imo

This ruling is not just against people and he should be concerned with the consequences coming his way.

Roberts was a bad choice, dang closet lib. Just about everyone of his decisions has flown in the face of conservarive values. Not very happy with that turd!

As seen on TV, It seems the rule of law is also worthless. Black robes and politicians no longer required. Anarchy will become the rule. The shadows of a future to come.

That's what I'd like to know Danny - how did this move so fast?

So if churches are to be treated as businesses as I believe they are why should they receive tax exempt status?

Because that gives government more control over them.

Because they provide benefits to the community (meals, gas, clothing, counseling, etc etc etc along with other "intangible" benefits), and do so free of charge. Kinda sorta like a charity.

Also I don't think anyone is making the argument that churches should be treated like a business, but rather that if a business can have more.than 10 people inside, then a church should be able to do so as well. Religious institutions are being singled out by creating a limit on attendees that non-religious institutions don't also have to follow.

Easy fix! Set a car on fire in front of your church and call it a protest against racist police.

Masks are optional.. but be safe

Don't believe its about the money its why people can congregate in one place "Safely" and not another and why one person(gov) can make that distinction
Better example is Barbershops Lady in Mi. opened her shop back up because during the crisis She took a job at a grocery chain store to keep afloat saying she was in contact with hundreds more in a day then ever came to her shop
