Beer can collectors - 06/08/20 08:19 PM

Anybody collect Beer Cans when they were younger? Seemed to ge a popular pastime in the 79's and 80's.

Yes. Back in the 70's. Always coveted the cone tops and flat tops but the weather was rough on them when found in the woods or ditches! Still have them boxed up just not sure where!

Looking at those pictures sure brings back memories! I had (have) many of those cans in my collection. Still have them boxed up in storage. I was huge into that in the early 80s.

I've got some of the Billy Beer cans, even one supposedly signed by Billy himself. I don't remember the details, but there was some type of promotion where you could send for a signed can, and of course I had to do that!

Re: Beer can collectors - 06/08/20 11:01 PM

I used to back when I was a kid. I don't know anyone that does these days. I remember I had all of the Steelers Superbowl team cans from the 70's by the case. My dad drank Iron city beer (A beer brewed in Pittsburgh) and he used to open them on the bottom so I could have the can intact. Wish I had them now. They are worth some money.

I see a few Canadian cans in that collection.
So drinking was 18 up here in Canada for you then and 21 in your home state?

Re: Beer can collectors - 06/08/20 11:47 PM

I was raised in OH and we would have lots of people go to Canada fishing so that is where a lot of those came from Drinking age in OH at that time was 19. The Schmidt wildlife series is also pretty neat. Never had any cone tops, those where a little before my time! Those of you that sold back in the day did good, not much value in them anymore.

I remember those Schmidt cans. I don't remember how many were in the wildlife series, but I tried to get them all.

I was at the ABA American Brewers Association Museum in Petosi WI. last week

and learned of this story https://mynorthwest.com/494786/discovered-old-wind-tunnel/ the engineers purchased new un-filled cans then fired them down the wind tunnel chamber it cleared the moisture from the tube , when they were dismantling it they found all these nearly perfect cans

they have a huge collection obviously

the economy's of beer

Have any Hop'n Gator cans?
That stuff was rough on a young man.

In 1969, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company introduced Hop'n Gator Lemon-Lime Lager, which was a combination of beer and Gatorade, but with 25% more alcohol than regular beer. The concoction was created by Robert Cade, the inventor of Gatorade.

Re: Beer can collectors - 06/12/20 10:01 PM

After reading this thread; it should be mandatory at all trappers conventions to have a evening fire pit; Beer can exchange; bring 6 full cans and swap out for 6 that you want to add to your collection. You guys below the line better bring wheel chairs to ride home in after having some Canadian beer, cause your going to have jelly leg syndrome afterwards.
