Nascar announced that they are banning all Confederate flags from their tracks

Re: Nascar - 06/10/20 10:21 PM

I don't think with the steps that Nascar has been taking that they will have to worry about limiting attendance

Nascar is minus one now. As is football also.

Although they may be getting use to racing with
empty seats...

The Confederate flag should not be associated with NASCAR because NASCAR is very dependent upon national advertisers, and they probably will not favor that association. Reminds me of the saying "cutting off your hand to spite your face".

That's only true if growth is the goal.
The same thing happened with the NHL expanding south.
They had decided that putting more NHL teams in Canada wouldn't create more viewership. Everyone in Canada that would watch, already was.... Hence why putting a team near Toronto makes no sense, you aren't creating new fans.

So they started pushing south, until they felt the backlash, that led to Winnipeg.
Now they will push on south again until it hits a wall.

Losing the confederate flag is a sign that NASCAR thinks its time to spread outside its southern strongholds.

It may be the wrong decision...
Still seems like a mistake the NHL made..... (no offence southerners, i love ya, just some of those NHL teams were a big mistake haha)

But it's quite clear, having witnessed these sorts of things before, that this is what NASCAR is doing...
Forsaking long time fans, for long time growth... that's the idea.

Growth doesn't have to be the goal though...
Look at the CFL, they change nothing. they stay the same and are happy with their niche but loyal fans..

NASCAR could have done that.

Re: Nascar - 06/10/20 10:43 PM

Not going to disagree with any opinion here. Nascar started in the South. The Southern people are proud of their heritage and of their upbringing, same as the Northern people. I'm a Yankee that built NASCAR engines for 15 years for Southerners. They're great people treated me like gold and I didn't deserve it. They like their Flag and that is one of their rights as an American Citizen.

This is my favourite thought on here.
No one would be surprised if it did.... NASCAR would love it, the media would love it.... Why wouldn't they make this happen? At least have it in the mix.
Surprised they didn't write a last second win over a car with a Confederate flag for photo ops

Think back to the days of Dale Earnhardt #3 and his sponsor, Wrangler jeans. Do you think Wrangler would want to divide their market between north and south or would they want it all? Do you think Budweiser would make a choice to divide their market? Of course not.

Levi Strauss chose to divide their base by opposing the 2nd amendment. Lots of companies are mixing politics with business.

BLM car is running at Martinsville tonight, driven by Bubba Wallace, the only black driver in NASCAR. He is pretty good at Martinsville - two truck series wins and several other top 10s, but he isn't good enough to win tonight.

Just like the circus. Nascar is caving to pressure from people who aren't patrons of Nascar and will end up alienating their actual patrons, who will hate the changes they made

Re: Nascar - 06/11/20 11:03 AM

Thirty years ago they were trying their best to get minorities as fans and in the stands. Didn't happen.

Along the way Brian France and Big Mike Helton ruined a booming sport that Bill France spent a lifetime building. The popularity, the fan base, the attendance, the tv coverage, is all back to to the levels of forty years ago. Hard to believe how much damage those two idiots did.

Re: Nascar - 06/11/20 11:47 AM

Charlotte would draw 140,000 fans back in the nineties, minority fans really low numbers some but not many. Now minorities still ain't going and attendance looks like half what it used to be.

The minority fans that did go back in the eighties and nineties, you knew they were there because they loved racing. Hat's off to them.

Well, my 23 yr old son and all his buddies drink bud/bud light.

He has 50g in his retirement account, on a high school diploma. (which by the way he received when he was 16)

Changes his own oil on his daily driver and a 2018 Silverado 1500.

None of them boys know what the real world is and don't care.

They live like we did when we were kids...with the exception of having a lot more money.

I also know a little of the inner workings of Nascar, being a weekly racing series champion it the late 90's.

When I went to Orlando for the big shindig (paid for by nascar) they had us sit through a series of sessions on how to properly represent the sponsors of nascar, and that without them their would be no nascar.

They've been trying to go national for over a decade with little to no results and a shrinking fan base.

Atlanta Motor Speedway has torn down an entire grandstand for lack of butts in the seats. Now there's talk of building Georgia's first casino on the property due to lack of interest.

Nascar has basically told it's base to go hump themselves long ago without understanding the rest of the country could care less about stock car racing.

NASCAR being a limp wrist; the writing was on the wall years ago when they folded over the tobacco crap. The Winston cup was racing. Now, they might as well hand out participation trophies and let them drive Big Wheels. It would be just as entertaining. I hope every redneck in the country (that will still go see this crap) brings a 20 foot Confederate flag and flies it in the infield! Time to flip the bird to NASCAR executive's, they are a bunch of sniveling cowards.
