J. , being from Wisconsin I ain't got much of a blue catfish eye. Gonna guess 2 to 8 pounders?
How much good fillets will you get out of that?
Enough money left over to buy you a haircut and a pair of shoes for Bud?

As always, Zim

Savell can you remember when you first started catching high fins? When I was a kid we had channels and “regular” blues, we call them something else but in today’s political correctness I won’t say that word. It wasn’t until the mid ‘90s when I saw my first high fin blue in lake Eufala and it was called a Mississippi white or white channel. Only recently we have started getting them in our local rivers. The research I have done online, the biologists do not distinguish them from “regular” blues but they are definitely a different fish.

Ok... they’ve been here in East Texas ever since I can remember... in fact they make up the majority of the catfish in the lake here

Had a buddy text me a picture last year of his good night of blue cat fishing. They were all spawning channel cats. lol He asked me how to tell the difference. I said put your hand in their mouth. If your knuckles are bloody when you pull it out you have yourself a bluecat.

Sorry, ya sawed off little Texican. And for the records, I am about 100 percent German and too stubborn to
argue about it. I got a 20 foot row of okra going in the garden. We'ons are about at the north stretch
of it being it able to mature.

Re: High Fin Blues - 06/24/20 01:08 AM

Savell, do you have any of what I would call our native blues? They are a darker blue with big bulldog heads and big lips. Even the smaller ones have a noticeably larger head and dark color. They aren’t good eating at all, nothing like the white meat on the high fins.

Re: High Fin Blues - 06/24/20 01:10 AM

Using cut bait or live Savell? Caught a few on lines couple weeks ago south of Toadsuck and those blues were liking big minnows.

.... are they located near structure ...like old porches or broke down pulpwood trucks ?

.... having trouble getting them on fresh cut shad/bream this year due to an abundance of small cats ... small live bream or bought goldfish is what’s working now

Re: High Fin Blues - 06/24/20 01:41 AM

That’s funny right there. Speaking of broke down pulpwood trucks, there use to be those old post and pulpwood trucks in every other yard with the hood up and the rear end out. 6 or 8 years ago when the scrap price went up those trucks disappeared. Never see em any more. I don’t know of any place around that still buys short wood and only one post plant still in operation.

Re: High Fin Blues - 06/24/20 02:00 AM

OK......to me it sounds like what y’all are calling native blue cat are male channels over 4 lbs or so in early summer ...they’ll look a lot like them but won’t have the hump on the back... and dark bloody meat when you clean them
Posted By: OKforester

Re: High Fin Blues - 06/24/20 02:04 AM

I will have to try to remember to take a picture of one and put on here. My buddies will think I’ve lost my mind taking a picture of a nasty ole blue.

The best way to tell the difference between a channel and a blue is
Blues jaws come together
Channels have an overbite

Don't have blues here, wish we did

Savell, I'm ashamed of you. What sort of backwoods living, lone-star drinking, honkytonking, slap-taming East Texan BUYS goldfish for bait? I suppose next you'll be buying worms so your boys don't get dirt under their fingernails picking up nightcrawlers? This is a sad day in America.
