LEO trade in pistols

Anybody ever purchased any of the LEO trade in pistols. Used service weapons. My son was asking me about them he was looking at a Glock 40s&w

I have not.

But I would personally compare it to buying a used car with 200,000 miles on it.

some may be fine at that mileage, but the overall odds are against you.

I have a 9mm Beretta from the 80s that was a LEO trade when departments went to 40 cal. Still one of my favorites. Never fails, very accurate.

I bought Glock 19 from a female LEO who only used it to qualify when she joined the force. She found that the grip was too large for her. It didn't have one blemish on it. Got it for a good price too. The only thing that troubled me about it was the laser print of the Sheriff Department on it. I always carried the bill of sale with me in case aI got pulled over and grilled about where I got my hands on it.

I can't speak to a specific handgun, but generally speaking you are fine with an LE trade in Glock they are not shot that much unless they are academy guns, they may have some wear on them and usually the night sights are dim but functionally they are fine, plus Glock parts are common and cheap and you can get the gen 3 model 22 for some real deals right now. I know our agency guns are gone through at least every 3 years if not more often and springs and wear parts replaced.

I have had a couple and have shot many more. If you are buying them from a store with a bunch of them it is pretty easy to pick a good one. Every experience I've had so far with used LE trade ins has been positive including trade ins from Eastern Block countries.

I’d look it over and check it for slop best you can do.

Most cops shoot their guns once or twice a year when they have to qualify. Lots of holster wear on older guns. I would buy one.

ever notice how many of the G22 G23 LEO trade ins there are ?

and how few of the 9mm trade ins there are available?

they just don't have the service life of the 9mm it is a hotter round in the exact same frame,

at some point they will break a pin or have started to elongate the holes in the frame

your paying 3/5 of a new gun the big question is are you getting more than 3/5 of a new gun

I would definitely buy a 9mm police trade in if they were 300 dollars but notice they never are

this is exactly right, carried everyday and shot very little. usually only for the required qualifications.

Y’all’s LEO’s are different than ours. Ours shoot their guns weekly. It’s my understanding they have a certain amount of ammo to go through to keep new ammo flowing in. I’d be worried if our deputies only shot twice a year.

I had to shoot a qualifier to take the firearms instructor class. I shot next to a Newark, NJ cop. After the rest of us qualified, he was asked to stay. I'm not sure what happened after we all left but he was in class the next morning - so he must have qualified. I think we had to keep 80% of our hits inside a 6" circle. I was shooting 3" groups and none of my shots left the circle. The cop next to me was shooting 11" groups consistently. I don't think he spent a lot of time at the range.

Ok thanks guys for all the advice. I will pass it all along to him as I no experience with pistols at all. I have three revolver and only shoot my Ruger single six 22 mag

id buy it, most dept pistols are gone through and any issues taken care of.

Pistol, probably fine as noted...Never buy one of the vehicles, though.

if they are factory refurbished trade in I would buy one

if not I would put a new locking block , locking block pin , trigger pin , recoil spring(s) and trigger housing with ejector and pin.

the locking block is your forward wear point for the slide and the trigger housing is the rear wear point , the pins take the battering mostly the locking block pin

I would probably also put a ghost evoelite connector in it

if your looking at 300 + parts new starts looking better

if your looking at 300 for a refurbished gun that is a deal

Ours see many thousands of rounds before being retired. By being retired, I mean DESTROYED. Won't find ours on the market. Every dept. is different and many firearms are used very little and others are put through the tests with a variety of training. You just never know what you may be getting. One may be carried by a routine officer and barely fired except annual requal. Another in the same batch may have been carried by an officer on a tac team of some sort that got used to the highest extent. For my piece of mind, I would go new.

He was looking at them online a friend of his bought one from a place called aimsurplus.com and it was in great shape. He told me it was a Glock 22 Gen3 for$325

well I went with my son to a gun store this weekend here in VT and we both ended up buying a LEO trade in Glock pistol 40 S&W. I got a Glock 22 GEN4 and my son got a Glock 23 GEN4. They both came with cases,instuctions,cleaning brushes and three clips. They both looked new condition not even ware from holsters. They were both the same price $399 each. Good price Bad price we were satisfied. I haven't shot mine yet but my son says his shoots great.

Palmetto State Armory has a few on sale now some S/Ws and Berettas. I just picked up Beretta 92 and plan to get a .380 Cheetah after that.
