Cabela's Rant

Cabela's Rant - 06/24/20 11:26 AM

So this may be a little long winded but I thought I would share my recent experience at Cabelas. I had completely forgotten about a musky tournament that my son and I had entered until this past Tuesday. In a rush I am going through my logs to see what has worked on these bodies of water in the past as it's been a while since I fished any of the lakes. In trying to pair down some of the baits and boxes I realized that I didn't have certain colors of certain baits so in a panic I start looking online to see if Fleet Farm or Cabelas have what I am looking for. Normally I would just order what I needed from the Musky Shop.

So I see that Cabelas has two of the baits that I need in the colors that I need. Head over after work and I immediately found one of the baits that I was looking for but not the other. Website says that they are "available" at this store so they should be somewhere. I ask a guy who is stocking the shelf and he flat tells me that if it's not on they shelf they are out. I said I don't even see the placard for a spot on the shelf are they stocked in another aisle. Again I get if it's not on the shelf they are out.

Well I looked some more and another guy comes by and I ask him. Get basically the same answer. I told him that it say available on the website so they are here somewhere. Now if it had said "limited quantities" I would assume that they sold out. I ask if he could look on his little computer but without a barcode apparently that thing is useless. He told me that they were probably in a box in back but that he wasn't going to look through them to look which is something that I have had other salesman do before at this store. I asked to speak with a manager and he told me he would get someone for me.

Ten minutes later I am still waiting so I walk around the aisle to where these two are stalking the shelves. Almost immediately after seeing me they both walked away. So I head to the counter to pay for the baits that I had. Yes I needed these baits that bad that I still bought them. Told the cashier and his statement was "ya that will happen". I asked if a manger was available he stated that one were but if I called the store the operator could get someone much faster for me. In the parking lot I called every extension 3 times without and answer on any.

So I called corporate and waited on hold for 45 minutes before I was able to talk to someone. I really wanted them to understand that they potentially lost a $4-$500 dollar sale that day. Yes musky fishing is an addiction and although I was only there 4 or 5 baits which still cost me $120 I am very susceptible to anything shiny and new. LOL. Anyway still have not heard a word back from the Store manager or anyone from Cabela's. Since Bass Pro bought it out the customer service has gone down the drain. Just have to shop elsewhere.

Wouldn't hold my breath.

Since the buyout, Cabela's has become a no-go for me.

It's a daily experience at our local home depot. A couple of those lazy fatties need to be fired on the spot.

I've been there 1 time since they got bought out. I'm just not impressed...

Wasn't overly impressed with their customer service before the buy out. Don't patronize them anymore.

If I never have to again I won't be. Don't buy from them often as it is. But when there is a $5000 paycheck on the line I'd buy what I need just about wherever I can get. FYI The black and orange 7" Pacemaker I had to have got me 5th place. Not too shabby for not having fished a tournament or for musky yet this year.

I soured on them at the Lexington store when the guy at the gun counter refused to show me a rifle that was going on sale the next day. Very few care nothing more than to beat their time in and not help the company.

When Cabelas sold out, they sold out, alright. They sold out the entire town of Sidney NE where they originated and had the corporate office.

Few weeks back I ordered 100 rounds of 5.56 online and some other ammo. Everything came but three 5.56i called them up, they told me they were out. I told them they weren't out when I ordered it they gave some excuse. While this was going on I was looking on their website the sane ammo was in stock with limited quantities but$1 more. I asked the guy if he could place an order he said no since it's limited quantities and the same thing will happen. We exchanged words I ordered it online just for kicks. The ammo came last week

don't count on retail stores anymore to have an accurate inventory.

when farm and fleet has a limited number online showing I would quick order them in the online and have them for store pickup.

drive to the store some times the next day to pick it up , half the time I got to go pull my own order and the times the inventory was actually correct was more like winning the lotto , which is I don't think it has happened yet.

I would be screaming mad as a manager that inventory was going missing all the time but it seems to just be the cost of having a store.

I haven't used that many online order and store pickup but the ones I have used if inventory is below 4 I no longer expect them to actually have more than 2.

last one the wife wanted beach towels , the closest store didn't have any in stock so she orders them from the next closest walmart , they had them , shelves full of them not indicated in the online inventory and I stood and waited 20 minutes for some one to find me a person who could handle online store pickup I had asked 3 people if they could help or find me someone who could by the time they found her , then she took 10 minutes to find them because they reorganized the stock room since last time she worked the online order counter.

I'll get some grief for this response but here goes.... I was in relatively small high end sporting goods retail all my life and had a great go at it. At first it was the catalogs that killed the mom and pop stores, then the internet came along. Customer service has degraded along the way, to say the least.

to the original poster... imagine if you had called Fred at the local bait store and asked him if he had XY or Z in stock you had a solid answer.

But unfortunately... too many of us looked for the best price 10 or 15 years ago and bought online... and they won. The REAL stores are gone, and you now have only so many options.

You can rant all you want but now they own you unless you are lucky enough to have a real business nearby.

We got poor online service twice in early October trying to buy steel shot for duck season. Then the same experience with a Christmas gift in late November, so I’m done with them. Troubles me to see them going down the tubes. I slept with a Cabela’s catalog in my bed as a kid. Read it a thousand times over. When the new one came it was a fight for sure with my brothers to see who got it first. Sad

Do your own reloading if the prices are not what you want to pay.

Re: Cabela's Rant - 06/24/20 06:36 PM

I ordered online from Bass Pro Shop/Cabelas 2 weeks ago. The order consisted of 20 different packages of soft plastic baits. A couple different styles and many different colors. My order was over $50.00 so I received free shipping. Still trying to figure out how they made any money as the lures were steeply discounted and no less than 7 different deliveries were made to my address through the post office and Fed Ex. Large envelopes with one package of baits that could have fit in an envelope 80% smaller. Not harping as they delivered everything in good condition but just odd to receive that many packages!

Was looking to buy a flyrod. Went to Cabelas. The guy in the dept started talking about how he takes 16 rods with him when he goes fishing on and on. The guy has never fly fished in his life and he was going to try and sell me a flyrod. I tell him I just need one rod as that's all you can flyfish with at a time.
He gives me a look and says "whatever".
That was it I walked out and have never been back since. That was about 12 years ago.
