Better to have a little to much then to little.

100 yards or closer only? .44 Mag. Guessing you’re in a thick area as it is, so a larger exit wound means more blood to follow and more blood loss means faster recovery.

Wow performance wise two totally different calibers. Most people have a hard time choosing between 22-250 and 220 swift or 30-06 and 300. I have shot a 44 ruger carbine for years and really enjoyed carrying that little gun around. I have seen what a 7-08 does on whitetail and have nothing but good things to say about it also. I think the 44 is a neat caliber but you don’t want to be in a situation where you have to shoot out to 175 or so.

Talking about the 44 ruger carbine, I worked with a forester and we kept one in the front seat with us everywhere we went. People would often ask how far something like that would shoot. He would reply “It doesn’t shoot very far but it sure shoots wide”.

7mm-08. At those ranges you can make head shots.

I've got a bunch of centerfire rifles. I'm getting the itch for a pistol caliber carbine of some sort, so I'll vote 44mag

i have a ruger 44 carbine and a ruger american in 7mm08 i am going with the 44 i am most of the time now pushing deer for my son so i want some thing light and shots are always close my son shot his first deer with that 44 carbine 21 years ago
can I make a suggestion
look at the Henry 44mag single shot break action gun about 80 dollars more but you will save that much on not needing a scope because it has iron sites.
when you put a scope on a break action like that it becomes harder to carry and you add a good pound to the wight.
80 dollars adds irons , hard wood stocks and american made.
they are also a nice looking rifle.
I would probably set it up with skinner peep sight I like a good peep site for a fast handling gun. but you don't Need anything but a box of ammo and you likely already have that.
like you say your not shooting all that far and likely at moving deer.

Go with the 7-08. The .44 magnum, as a pistol cartridge, will lose too much energy at a hundred yards to be an effective killer.
Jim
personally I really like 308 but I know that wasn't an option
my son and I did some testing of bullet deflection shooting through 1/2 inch plywood and found the 180gr bullets through 1/2 inch plywood at 25 yards only barely opened up the group at 50 yards a 3/4 inch group at 25 was a 1 1/2 to 2 inches at 50 yards while lighter bullets like the 150 were over 3 to 5 inches after going through the plywood and traveling another 25 yards.
I have looked at that Henry Single shot several times thinking that in 308 because I like it , load for it and keep a good stock of it around would be a handy gun.

Thick woods in NH....44 mag is plenty
the CVA are imported from Spain
which I figure is why there are not 223 or 308 rifles made in the scout line , they have laws against civilians having nato cartridge guns
