Humminbird Helix 7 with Mega SI, GPS. Set you back about $700 US.

I use lowrance fish finders. Many to choose from and they sell ice fishing transducers so you can take it from your boat to ice fishing. Even a ice fishing set up to put it in. Model and size you'll have to figure out yourself depending on boat size etc..

Garmin is the best thing going right now.

Re: Fish locators choices.? - 06/26/20 08:07 PM

I got a Garmin 93 with side imaging in March. Haven't really played with the side imaging, I've only used it snagging this spring. The down imaging is amazing. I like seeing what kind of fish is under the boat. Got mine at Bass Pro on sale for $599. If I win the lottery I'll get the live scope transducer lol

Northof50 asking a question on Tman??? That’s a first lol.

I just bought this one today. Can also use it for ice fishing, but gotta buy the transducer separate first.

Polishing rusty old lanterns and bringing them back to function again and catching fish without a modern sissy crutch, I know this is all hard for a gal like you to understand. I am wrong for expecting you to. Bless your heart!

People use bait still?

Used some frozen squid when I was in the keys, but haven't used minnows, worms, crayfish, etc in well...pretty much ever.

I can catch fifty bass in a day and change tube jigs three times maybe. And only when it is so beat to crap it doesn't resemble a tube any more. And that's if they are slow. Most days just throw the same spinnerbait I have on most of the summer.

Might trap some minnows this winter, but probably use the same strips of walleye belly skin that has generally always outfished minnows.

JP, you mentioned using yours for ice. Does it have Bluetooth? My buddies hummingbird goes to his phone so he can watch me teasing Lakers from 40 feet away in the shack. He'll see me get a hit and get all excited. Lol

Honestly, if it weren't raining and my fingers and wrist weren't so screwed up, I'd be fishing. So now, well you guessed it lol.

Brought my pack rod to Cuba this past winter. Apparently fishing from the resort is seen as strange for some reason. Went with some Cuban locals later on though. They knew the spots. Some un cooked shrimp "borrowed" from the kitchen and we were off.

All inclusive means bait too, right?

Ended up at one of the Cubans cousins restaurant after a few miles through the bush. They fried up what we caught. Was a good time. No tourists at the little restaurant either.

$1000 Canadian and want to use it for winter?

Forget about it, your budget isn't high enough. If you want to use a summer/winter unit, you'll want a live scope. That will run you 2500 US or abouts.

Personally I think for a hard core run an gun type ice fishing, I'll take my vexilar over a Live Scope.

For a summer unit look for one that is compatible with lake chips for water bodies you intend to fish.

Than save another $1000 and guy a Vexilar/Hummingbird digital unit.

Re: Fish locators choices.? - 06/27/20 01:58 AM

Thanks 49 er
my Lk Winnipeg is not run and gun
after all my research in fisheries I know they move when they want
looking at some of the individual pings off some of the tracked fish tells you this, catch one and they send all the data for that fish. Gota love freedom of information in Canada. or who you know =how you know
Buddy is setting one up now to have the trolling motor run the contours.

Re: Fish locators choices.? - 06/27/20 02:14 AM

My limited experience on Lake Winnipeg is it's proved beneficial to move several times a day vs staying stationary all day.

Not a 40 50 holes a day type fishing but moving non the less.

My Helix 7 I just bought will be used for ice fishing too. I paid $750CDN for it, then paid $50 for the battery which is dumb that I had to buy it separately.
The only thing I need to buy now is the transducer which is $133.

So about $1000 and should be good for ice fishing with it.

I will also buy a case for it, so that is extra, but not absolutely needed. Some guys make their own.

My Garmin is panoptix capable. I'll take one too!

We got one as a demo unit and those suckers are pretty cool.

I switch my new Garmin between my welded aluminum, and my Grady white. Still need a transducer for the Grady...panoptix is awful tempting

Re: Fish locators choices.? - 06/29/20 10:35 AM

Back to the original question I have used the Helix for the last few years and I love it. I just bought a Solix and moved the Helix to the back of the boat but haven't had a lot of time with it yet. If used on the boat and the right trolling motor everything can be set for the trolling motor to run itself. That alone will drive up the catch rate 15-20%. More time fishing equals more fish. Using the side scan to locate the fish is a game changer as well when you understand what you are looking at. Has also helped with musky fishing. Being I am normally in the back of the boat the side scan allows me to see follows that I might not have seen giving me a second crack at fish. Go with the biggest screen you can afford.

All the locators now are great and basically have all the same features. Fished with a buddy who uses the Garmin and I do like that one but more for an ice fishing application.
