Do you survive summer? It is @ 82 here right now and @ 1100 % humidity. I am over it, ready for snow.

Corn starch?

If it wasn't for my love of fresh garden tomatoes and the family here, I think I would have moved to Alaska long ago. I am built for cold not heat.

Heat index of 105 here but it will get hotter if you go to south alabama or swamp wolf territory it's really hot.

Haha you yankees complaining about humidity. Thats cute. That goes for all of you that have posted. We have 2 seasons here. Summer and about 2 weeks of "winter" sometime in february.

LOL!!!

Remember this when the topic of winter comes up and one of you Northerners pipe up and remind us that we don't know what cold is.

It was 81° when I left the house at 5:30 this morning.

We say the same thing about you guys up north with your 6 month winters and subzero temps - just a matter of getting used to it. 96 today here and it was a good day of bass fishing on the river - just a typical June day here.

And ditto on the corn starch....

Re: Southerners, how in the world? - 06/30/20 01:19 AM

Mike, I've been in Norman several times and that weather is something. July and August hot and windy soon as the sun is up. But it cools off after sundown better than it does here. Winter, raw and windy when I was there. Always wanted to see what would happen if the wind stopped blowing, never did. I remember one summer evening watching scissortails flying around.

Got 3.5 inches of rain here over night. Here come the skeeters. May have to go get some more shotgun shells to fend them off.

The one thing I don’t miss is the humidity when I moved from Pennsylvania to Idaho several years ago. However, I don’t care not seeing my lawn from November to March with the constant snow on it

Bless you southern folks, lived there couldn't stand it. Here's my 2 cents on the south... Great manners / respect for those that earn it, food is the best beats our cooking hands down (at least for me my kids would disagree), not impressed with any of the land animals but the fishing is great, but I can't handle the heat!! Had to get out the kitchen.. Trying to convince the wife to move to Alaska as we speak. Personally I hate the summer could handle winter year round

Re: Southerners, how in the world? - 06/30/20 02:46 AM

In the 90s and humid here today. Spent a couple hours on the tractor running the finishing mower, finished paining the Jon boat, and went through three sets of clothes from being soaked with sweat. Will be this way until early October. I hate summer. It’s even too hot to fish!

Re: Southerners, how in the world? - 06/30/20 04:02 AM

Yall ought to get up on a nice big roof this time of year in the Southern Part of Texas. Combine that with me being old and out of shape I ought to get some kinda hazard pay LOL

Re: Southerners, how in the world? - 06/30/20 04:07 AM

103 and 36% humidity here today. I know 36% is nothing but if you’re used to 10% it sucks. I don’t know how you guys do 50+
Posted By: Leftlane

Re: Southerners, how in the world? - 06/30/20 04:08 AM

It doesn't take much of that hot / humid combination and my git up and go will get up and leave me I assure you

Re: Southerners, how in the world? - 06/30/20 04:09 AM

It's the dew point that counts. When it's over 90 degrees and the dew point is over 70, you know you're in the south. You sweat, it doesn't evaporate, it just feels sticky.

Re: Southerners, how in the world? - 06/30/20 05:10 AM

Ever notice how slow folks from the South move? Its steady movement, just slow. That is how one deals with the heat.
I spent some time in Arkansas. The folks there would come into the bar at night to tip back a few after being out in the heat all day. What I found interesting was the constant wiping of the arms from shoulder down to the hands. I asked my buddy who was from there what was that all about. He said that it was just the continuation of what those guys need to do all day out in the miserable environment which is much of Arkansas. The wiping is how they keep from dying from blood loss from mosquitoes. Just a habit, he said.

At least with the cold you can always put more clothes on and work harder to stay comfortable. Above 90 degrees you run out of clothes to take off.

This got me thinking, we learn from a real early age how to watch for snakes and to avoid places they’re likely to hide. My son turns 6 this weekend and we’ve been teaching him this over the summer. Never really thought about it being a learned behavior.

Something else that’s weird down here is the ticks. I spent 12 weeks in Virginia last spring, and the folks warned everyone about ticks. If you got one on you they suggested that you go to the medical staff to get on antibiotics! The folks from areas that don’t have them were scared to death! I was like, guys, I literally pull a tick a week off me in the summertime, it’s not a big deal. Of course I missed one a few years ago and got a case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever as a result, but it all worked out after some meds.

My brother was crossing the border at International Falls to go fishing. Customs guy checking his trunk grabs a zip lock bag with white powder in it.
He says what have we got here? As he opens the bag, puts his finger in it, then licks his finger and puts it to his nose.
My brother answered, "that's corn starch, I put it on my butt when it's hot to keep from getting galled. Didn't take the guy long to throw the bag back in the trunk and wipe his fingers off! Carry on!

Warrior, anything north of about montgomery is suspect to me.

North and south alabama folks are two different breeds. You can go to far south in florida and you end up back in yankee territory.

You can go the uptown route and get some "monkey butt" powder. Just flavored-up corn starch in a fancy shaker can.
