Aint saying much....my father holds the kraut eating record at Kraut Fest Racine county. You willing to pay $20 a lbs for it?
Posted By: Bruce T

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/01/20 09:20 PM

Bought the lobsters right off the boat at $1 a pound.I ate 14 of them.I sure wouldn't win the kraut record as that is one of the two foods I have tried and hated. The other is cottage cheese.

Rock lobster is my favorite type of lobster.
I'd rather have shrimp.

Fun fact; lobster used to be fed to prisoners because it was considered worse than low class.

Pike River, you need to be from the East coast to appreciate lobster.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/01/20 09:47 PM

I've had small lobster that was really good, and a big lobster that had a bitterness to it.
My fave is boiled peeled shrimp with cocktail sauce.

They taste OK but too expensive here for what you get.

The bigger the better. In Canada I look around and can find them much cheaper buying them right off the boats.

If you don't like lobster, you probably haven't had it cooked correctly. All seafood can be tricky if you don't know what your doing. That being said, the best eating on the planet are King crab legs. There is no comparison.

Have had king crab legs. They are good also.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/01/20 10:09 PM

One thing about seafood is that fresh caught is by far the best.
Too far inland and its not the same.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/01/20 10:11 PM

If Blue Crabs grew as large as lobsters, there would not be a market for lobster.

When early settlers arrived in America, the lobsters could be picked up on shore in large numbers. There was a law passed to limit the number of days servants could be forced to eat lobsters.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/01/20 10:12 PM

I'm sure there's a lot of truth to that.
I've had some terrible beef steak too.

To much work for me for what little you get with blue crabs.

I went to Alaska and ate seafood everywhere I went. It was all deep fat fried. WHAT???? Best thing I had up there was prime rib. Probly from Nebraska.

The lobsters in a grocery store...sitting in those tanks, have no taste. It’s a whole nuther game when you get them fresh at the coast....nice and sweet and salty.....We are having Lobstahs and STEAMAHS this weekend ....25 lobos and 10 pounds of steamers

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/02/20 12:42 AM

I like lobster.
I like scallops and clams better.
We crab and I probably like blue crabs the best except for all the work to get to a tiny bit of meat.
Lobster wins the effort vs. quantity competition.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/02/20 12:49 AM

Fresh king crab is un-real. I get/catch fresh clams, scallops, dungies, shrimp, prawns, but king crab rules the day like no other.
And while I have never had Maine lobster off the boat, I have had spiny lobster off the boat, on the west coast

Interesting piece of history. During the Revolutionary War, the British held some American prisoners of war on ships. Conditions were brutal with minimal food rations. They were fed lobsters due to the fact that they were plentiful, cheap and considered "trash" food. Prisoners threatened to riot due to the large amounts of lobster they were forced to eat.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/02/20 01:20 AM

I bet there was quite a few dead pnes and very few live ones in what they fed them prisoners especially if they were picking up what drfted up on shore

You guys are crazy! Lobster is king , shrimp is good but doesn’t hold a candle to cold water lobster. I’m with Bruce on this one

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/02/20 02:14 AM

The live lobster I have tried from the Northeast is pretty good, in small doses. King crab right from the cooker is king. Fresh spot prawns are second in my book. I will eat way too many and end up paying for it with the spots. Dungeness is third. Lobster, for me, isn’t worth the price. I might feel differently if I lived by the ocean they come from. Super fresh is where it’s at with seafood.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/02/20 02:42 AM

King crab is great, but the best seafood I've had is a tie between some big, fresh-caught Kodiak scallops, grilled, and snow crab we bought alive from a fisherman in Chignik, Alaska.

It is pricey- but the IQF (Individually quick frozen) that is processed right on the boat will surprise you.

I do to. I'm a fair hand with the fresh pork or aged beef so when I want to pay for someone else's expertise I usually pick seafood.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/02/20 03:22 AM

I’ve had some great FRESH seafood in my day. Caught lots of halibut while bear hunting in Alaska. Fresh Dungeness crab and shrimp from our traps there, dug clams while bears were watching me. Baked halibut in sour cream on the boat was fantastic. Caught lots of kings and cohos a couple years later while fishing from the same boat, they too were unforgettable.

As a kid, I’d go to Gulfport, Mississippi and shrimp with my uncle. He was a welder at the big ship yard, and had a shrimp boat he’d run on his days off. We’d gig flounder off the barrier island at night. He’d fry up shrimp or flounder that were hours old.

But I think the best seafood I’ve eaten were lobsters in Maine. I’ve been there eight times, and when I visit, I pretty much stick to lobster. I’m really fond of a good lobster roll....lots of good lobster shacks on Route 1.

Lol.....years ago , Red Lobster had a promotion for ' Crabby Monday ' all you eat snow crab , mondays only. I went with a buddy a bunch of times. Ate a pile each time. Then after only a few months , it disappeared.
I found out much later , it was considered one of the worst marketing failures of all time. Red Lobster lost piles of money on it. Like 3-4 million dollars in just one quarter. They underestimated the amount some people could eat , plus crab prices spiked just as they started the promotion. It was said they started to lose money on the 2nd or 3rd helpings. CEO at the time resigned due to the losses incurred. I helped with that , I could eat 8 or 9 servings in one sitting........burp...... grin

Travelling through the States when the kids were "Disney" age, attending all you can eat buffets and watching morbidly obese people eat themselves near to death on the featured items was actually better entertainment then Disney itself.

To each their own, but I think the claws are more tender. It's kind of like the difference between light and dark meat on a chicken or turkey. Sort of.

Re: Lobster- Over Rated - 07/02/20 02:26 PM

I’ve had ..off the boat ,5 pound lobsters. And they were just as tender...and yes the claws are the best. The tail meat is a big muscle that they use to swim with....so it’s a little tougher.

My only debate regarding lobsters is whether to go to Young's and eat them while looking over Penobscot Bay or whether to swing by Kirby's and cook them at home...

Lobster Rolls are not overated
I prefer Young’s on the bay.
Or that place in Searsport

I do miss crabbing on the Chesapeake tho. Great place to grow up

Now you're talkin'....

Dungeness on lightly buttered sourdough , toasted to perfection with melted moz cheese , touch of horseradish and sweet pickle on the side.

Shrimp and egg salad either as is or on bread is great too.

Lobstah is ok but not my favourite .
