Proof reading seems expensive

Proof reading seems expensive - 07/02/20 03:01 PM

I finally saved up enough shekels to have that new book published. It had to be proof-read, and I'm having the publishing place do it. It's costing just under a thousand dollars to have it proof-read. I had no idea it was that expensive, but it needs done.

A mere drop in the bucket compared to the take when that knowledge hits the shelf.

Well, I'm thinking a good proof reader is a rare bird. Has to be an expert speller, expert at grammar, expert at punctuation and able to catch others mistakes. Just because someone is a retired high school english teacher doesn't mean they will be a good proof reader. I suspect the demand is there for people able to do it.

Paul,

You should have recruited one of Trapperman's
unofficial spelling and grammar police for the job.

I used to proofread for two different newspapers
and have a obnoxious habit of proof reading posts here.

O'Gorman never hired a proof-reader for his book:
"High Rolling Fox Trapping", and many others.

His books have sold 1000's of copies !! LOL laugh

I concur with my esteemed colleague from New York. I spend my entire day proofreading and re-writing. I'd consider it an honor to proofread something for the Dobbins family.

I derive the greatest satisfaction from proof-reading
the posts of the vaunted Canadian Trapper known
as BOCO !!! laugh

As any American can tell you,
The Canadian Super Trapper needs all the spelling,
grammar, and punctuation help he can get.

Especially when he's hitting the bottle hard !!! laugh

Learning new ways is the title. The bulk of the book is a series of articles dad wrote around 1989 or thereabouts. It's about a trapping trip he made to Mississippi.

Will this be sold from your website, Amazon or both? If from your website put me down for a signed copy and some backbreaker.

Paul,

Good luck on the book editing and proofreading. I used to proof articles back in the day,
Now I'd just scan your book, make a copy, and sell it to the Chinese.
For $1500
Easy-peasy transaction.

On top of the $495 I charged you initially.

Re: Proof reading seems expensive - 07/03/20 12:00 AM

When Charlie was writing for The Trapper and Predator during the 1980' I would read his articles before I would read anything else . His way of telling the story always made his articles interesting .enjoyable and a learning experience I cannot imagine this book will be any less than any of his other writings

Should've had Coonman proofread it

Re: Proof reading seems expensive - 07/03/20 01:32 AM

Personally, I would be just fine with it as you wrote it. After spending some time on here I am over the grammar and spelling thing. Everybody is on their dang cell phone and typing like a teenager. Not many here know grammar or spelling. Just saying.

I didn't write most of it. Dad was the author for the bulk of the book.

To be honest, I would like to read it the way he wrote it. Somehow it gives you an idea of what they went through. That, and it makes me feel better at how I suck at the English languish.

Re: Proof reading seems expensive - 07/03/20 03:28 AM

There is a big difference between a proof reader and an editor, when it comes to writing a novel verses a how to book. One novel I wrote I sent 2 chapters to her, because she was supposed to be a hot shot editor. They not only correct the grammar and spelling, but they changed to what they are supposed to know a publisher will buy. Well, when I got the first chapter back, I didn't even recognize it as my story. She did the sample for nothing, but wanted $2800 to do the entire 24 chapters, and there were no guarantees a publisher would buy it.

I said, thank you, but no thank you.

I would have helped for an ounce of civet musk paste and four ounces of skunky backbreaker, plus offered guaranteed satisfaction or no lure. :-)
