Re: to hot out side - 07/03/20 08:44 PM

Growing up everybody always made a big deal about July 4th. I was always on a wagon or in the mow. The best was when ya filled wagons back up and thought you’d get done early...until the boss would just borrow the neighbors wagons. Good lord it was hard work but I wouldn’t trade them days for nothing. At the end of baling season you was one bad hombre.

Tomorrow is supposed to be hotter.

Re: to hot out side - 07/03/20 09:26 PM

90's here in SE Nebraska.... and very humid. Clothes won't dry on the line. Water grass is growing everywhere, and under the trees in my creek bottom it never dries so I can mow without cutting a track. Lots to do outside so I just come inside my cabin every so often and take off my sweat soaked shirt and put on a dry one.... cool off a little ... then back outside. Gotta feed the skeeters you know !!

Yeah I goofed up and left something I wanted to use in the back of the truck. I had to move to the shade and do something else for a while.

Happy trapping and drink lots of Gatorade or the knock off they have at HEB

I'm old, and wore long sleeve shirt all day Friday, 95ish degrees.
Morning cool, son-in-law and I cut & loaded his pickup & trailer with firewood from logs I saved him.
Afternoon was stinking hot & humid, helped friend put up hay. I was mostly in barn.

Today, the 4th, wife & are taking the day off and attending two family picnics.

The Hispanics bundle up with head coverings, long sleeved shirts, and so much that they make a Covid mask-wearing fella look like a weeny!
The old Michigander turned Texan in me can't, make that happen. I'd fry like Boco's Canadian bacon on a barbie-Q.

Checking traps today and gonna get 65 or so sets checked on 20 square miles "done" fast, a few new tracks (if and when I see them) set up on, and then get my mocha colored hide back to this lodge! I usually try to be done by 3:00, as the temps hit about 103-106 this time of year here in south Tejas.

Man, the rattle snakes are OUT! Saw a couple good ones yesterday, by I wasn't able to Wyatt Earp 'em. I skin the 5 foot plus rattlers, tan the hide, and sell them. $100 each. Better than a sharp stick in the eyeball. But, sometimes the pistola and the snake tongs MUST respect the plan of the snake, and sometimes the snake is easy peasy.

Donna tells me that between the coyotes wanting to bite ya, the snakes lunging to strike ya, and the big old Texas red ants wanting to bite and sting ya, it's a wonder anything survives in this place.

I love it!
Blessings!

My Dad used to talk about threshing oats in this kind of weather. The men working in overalls and long sleeved shirts, then coming in for the noon meal of heavy food like fried chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy. All washed down with hot coffee, of course, then back to the field.

My typical summer wear is a lightweight cotton, long sleeve shirt in a light color and a wide-brimmed hat. I start out in the spring with a T-shirt and ball cap but by mid-June my forearms and the back of my neck are starting to look like Slim Jims.

The LS shirt and wide hat are definitely cooler than a T and ball cap. And it keeps the sun off me (one reason it's cooler).

Oh, and I could be considered an old guy at 62.

Re: to hot out side - 07/04/20 12:11 PM

The older I get, the harder the humidity is to take.
Yesterday wasn't so bad, I spend almost all day outside.
There are a few days coming up that look like dew points in the high 70's
I have plans to be wading in a trout stream on those days.
Stay hydrated

Wool wicks pretty well. When I cycled (bicycle) a lot I wore will jerseys in the summer. While riding I would actually catch a chill.

Re: to hot out side - 07/04/20 01:35 PM

^ I have been fencing and picking wild berries the last few weeks. I wore light long johns a few days and always have long sleeve, high collar sweater type shirts or a hooded sweatshirt with hood up and tied.

When down on river bottom it helps with mosquitos and the long johns for ticks. Socks need to be up over the pants also.

It has been hot but to me it does keep you cooler instead of having the sun beat down on bare skin. It does keep heat out of body keeping skin covered. IMO

Re: to hot out side - 07/05/20 03:36 AM

Mowing 2nd cutting in July on top of the 1st crop near the roof with the metal roofs was a good way to help make weight for wrestling later in the year.
We have been running at 88-91 with humidity readings near 70% with heat indexes 95-100 with limited breeze. Tomorrow may be the hottest day yet and early to the middle of next week similar. In this heat the life cycle of some insects is hours not days.
