22 Hornet Opinions - 07/10/20 02:29 AM

Well I’m selling a Browning BSS and I’m currently staring at a Ruger 77 All Weather 22 Hornet..... Talk me out of it. How is the hornet on fur? Any opinion is wanted on the ruger itself and or the caliber.

40 grainer hardly ever comes out of a woodchuck or Fox. But it liquefies the insides.

Re: 22 Hornet Opinions - 07/10/20 03:56 AM

imo the best fox round ever. I never shot one with mine, but it should be a great bobcat round also.

I wish I had a nickle for every ground hog and fox with mine over the years.

I have the Ruger 77 in 22 K- Hornet. Like its said above great fox and bobcat round. Mine is stock barrel then after market trigger. Thing is a one hole shooter at 100 yard. Only bullet it don't like was the Nosler/Winchester combo that was made in the early 2000s. Also knocks the heads off of forest chickens real nice. I say go for it. Jon

I went through the same dilemma a few years back. Had a CZ in 22 hornet all picked out. I went with the 204 ruger instead. Very fur friendly and a lot more range. Plus, I have a 22 WMR and thought the hornet wasn’t much of an increase over it to justify a new gun

Buy it. I have a Ruger in 22 Hornet. Excellent round ,fur friendly. Try Hornady 35 gr. bullets and AA 1680 powder. Very accurate.

I like my hornet. Great fox gun. Beaver, bobcats very little damage. Coyotes are tough. Need to be real sure of your shot. My rifle doesn’t like max loads. Groups open up quickly if I push velocity. Long before I get a stuck case or a flat primer.

What are you asking for your BSS ?

I was not impressed with it on coyotes.

I have shot a savage 23D in .22 hornet for 40 years. Great for squirrels and any small animal. Accurate, cheap to shoot, easy to load. Craps out at about 150 yards. i have shot about 45 coyotes with it and every bullet I shot came out the back of a coyote and left a 50 cent piece sized hole. I shot both hornet bullets from Speer, 40 gr Ballistic tips Nosler, and Hornady and a 35 grain one (2900 fps) from Hornady. They all come out the other side for me. The regular hornet bullet in 45 gr ( 2400 fps) from Speer is the best and most accurate. It takes the head right off a squirrel. I shot a deer with it when I was young. It took the top right off the heart with that same bullet. You will just have to get use to the bullet drop after about 150 yards. I have only taken it coyote hunting 3 times and shot three coyotes with it while actually coyote hunting. All the rest were incidental while hunting squirrels. I like a .22 250 for coyotes for the range and hydro shock factor. I shot a few prairie dogs with it and it isn't real loud so they don't get scarred back down their holes as bad as when you are shooting a .223 or .22 250. They all hide when the 250 goes off and sometimes it can be a while before they come back out but the hornet doesn't scare then so bad. I think you will like it- Good luck.

I have Rugers. They all shoot very well. I have heard there can be trigger issues but you can do something about that.

22 Hornet bridges the gap between 22 mag and .223. Wonder full little gun especially for a walking varmint gun. No kick, low noise level when fired as far as center fires go. It's got it's place that is for sure and if you roll your own a pound of powder can go a long ways. Like Larry says 150 yard gun.

I have a Ruger varmint in 22 hornet. Killed around 17 or 18 yotes with it last year. One hole gun but had a terrible trigger at 6.5lbs. Put a volquartzen target sear in it and the trigger went to 1.75lbs. Most of my shots are on bait or scent posts. 100 yards and under. Deadly. Shoot hornady vmax. Most drt at that range. Liver and back they ran but were found under 200 yards usually.

Hornet bridges 22 mag to .218 Bee, then we bridge with a .222 Rem on the way to.223. If your using 100 FPS bridges.

My dad has one I shot my fislrst deer with it and he's recently been talking about selling it. I looked at him and told him I'd buy it from him first. Absolutely love that gun took an armadillo head off just a week ago. It's a Ruger 77 22 hornet

Re: 22 Hornet Opinions - 07/14/20 04:30 PM

I just don’t know if it’d be worth it as my calling gun now is an h&r bull barrel 204

Re: 22 Hornet Opinions - 07/14/20 05:36 PM

There’s nothing that hornet will do that your 204 won’t.

Re: 22 Hornet Opinions - 07/15/20 11:48 PM

Some of our groundhogs get pretty fat on clover and alfalfa and can soak up a 22lr and get away if not hit well. I was using a 22/250 with great results but had an issue. On smaller hayfields of say 5 acres, the crack of the 22/250 would send all other 'hogs into the burrow and that was it for the day. looked around for something more powerful than 22lr but without the harsh blast of the hotrod .22 calibers. Hit upon a 22 hornet single shot at a gun gunshop and it turned out great. Anchors all the groundhogs and in the smaller fields just sitting a bit and waiting the others will usually come back out.
