Favorite fur to trap?

Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 02:38 AM

I personally like muskrat just cause it’s simple and fun. Other animals may be more valuable but unless you got a huge line you ain’t gonna make much so why not trap the simple fun thing.

Coyotes for the challenge of it.
Bobcat when our Midwest cats have enough value to be worth harvesting.
Those are the only 2 animals I've tried to trap other than some nuisance coons around the buildings.

Cats are by far my favorite thing to trap. We don't have much of them around here so sometimes it's an uphill battle. One of these years I'm heading where they are like possums just to say I did it.

Re: Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 03:26 AM

Well they are just like possums down here- if you dont believe me try to sell a batch of them

Re: Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 03:33 AM

I love to catch coons. We don’t have muskrats so coons are the fun and easy thing to catch around here.

I started out trapping rats and 55 years later their still my favorite. Cats are fun too as are otter. Trapping rats takes me back to when l was a kid.

Re: Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 03:55 AM

Trapped everything when I was younger, now I pretty much just target yotes - trapping them gets me access to several farms to hunt.

Big Beavah!!!

Re: Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 04:02 AM

Coyotes, then mink, then coon.

There is something pretty cool though about standing by a beaver dam and breaking open a big longspring to take beaver. Makes me feel like hundred years of trappers before me doing same thing.

Small young ones are nice too, better eating in my opinion.

Mark me down as red fox as a favorite.

Although skunk is nice too, smells like money to me.

Fox and Mink was, and will always be, my favorite furbearers to trap.

But now I've gone rogue, and like making war on the interloping coyote.

Coyotes because they are smarter than me.
Then bobcats because they are goofy.
Then muskrats because of the memories.

Re: Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 11:50 AM

Beaver and otter, followed by coyotes. Mason, where are you at in Ohio? It might be worth checking out the DNR beaver and otter lottery, as you can get a few spots depending on your zone.

Raccoon, being I can catch quite a few in a hurry. I do love trapping muskrats in a large swamp all alone though.

Re: Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 12:54 PM

Coyotes because they challenge me, especially late season in snow.

Then Red fox , then mink. I used to love trapping beaver till I got old wink

I'm gonna put some time into muskrats this season too..

I'm getting tired of avoiding Bobcats , not allowed

I can only trap 1 otter so what's the use...

Beaver for the friends I've trapped with, Bobcats cause they bailed us out$, coyotes for the people I've helped, mink for fun, weasels from my youth, possums cause I left them, lions for the rush I get and a dog to add to everything!

Re: Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 04:40 PM

Muskrats, I like the smell of a muskrat pelt. Next comes moles. I get a lot of satisfaction killing one as they try to ruin my lawn. Mink used to thrill me. Now I get more pleasure catching possums as they are delicious baked with sweet tators.

Re: Favorite fur to trap? - 07/11/20 05:05 PM

Muskrats have probably always been my favorite. The problem is that they have basically not existed in my area of southeast PA for the last twenty-thirty years. I really wish we had the numbers we used to.

So I target my second favorite; the red fox. Around here they are plentiful, easy to catch and easy to put up. I have found alternative markets for my catch and have been averaging around $16.00 while I see a bunch of folks letting there's go for $5.00-$6.00 averages at last season's Pennsylvania Trapper's Association auctions. I would stop trapping them before I sold them that cheap.

Coyotes for land critters. Beaver are a blast for water critters. But I'm always pretty happy when I get an otter.

I never even tried to catch a wolverine but It would be pretty cool to catch one. Caught a couple of wolves and some lynx.
It would have to be beavers for me.
