22-250 for coyotes - 07/11/20 12:05 PM

Is it possible to get a bullet that will result in minimal damage? Maybe better to not use it on coyotes?
Currently not in a position to buy anything else.

Yes, by downloading to .222 Rem velocities and load thin jacketed bullets. Like Hornady SX which are getting harder to find.

i shoot 55 grain nosler ballistic tips. not all plastic tipped bullets are the same. most of the time i dont need to sew a big mess. I put them over 35 grains of IMR 4895. You can go little more powder if you like but my rifle likes that amount.

For deer I shoot 55 grain sierra game kings. will shoot the same as the Noslers in my rifle. Shoot the same load too. Pick your shots. They can go a long ways if you miss the heart , bottom of the lungs, spine, or brain. My rifle is accurate. If they are standing still its no problem.

Stay off of the shoulder bone and avoid shots from the front or running away will save you some sewing.

I use a 55 grain hollow point and try to shoot in shoulder or frontal shot

55 grain Speer hot cor in my 250. Used to shoot Speer 70 grain semi-spitzer but they are hard to find. Like was said above, stay away from the shoulder bones if possible. Give it an easy in and if it's going to exit give it an easy out. Like ribs to ribs. Straight on facing shots should be more fur friendly.

Thanks for all the help. I’m leaning to 40-55 grain hollow point.

My Remington 700 in .22-250 has been my main coyote rifle for 41 years.
I shoot a Speer 52 grain hollow point.
The best place to shoot a coyote is where ever you can hit it.
That being said, you hit one on the edge and your going to be sewing.

Was a time I couldn't get the Speers used Hornady 50 grain HP for several seasons. Really liked them almost switched. If you see a vapor trail bring your load down a little.

I use the cheap white box Winchester 45gr HP and see very little damage to coyotes with my .250 and they are very accurate for me with my Tikka.

I run the 55 grain softpoint gameking 1365 in my 250 with ar comp powder 3750fps avg. Another bullet that I have had good success with is the sierra's 52 grain matchking I ran it with imr 4064 3520fps avg.
So far I like the 55grain softpoint I dont have to be as picky about my shot with regard to the shoulder bone.

X2 Seem to be accurate from my Ruger as well.

Lot of options if you handload, if not, stick to a stouter buildt hollow point or soft point.
If handloading, the Sierra 55 grain softpoint is my go-to to..

You can literally hear two bangs when shooting coyotes with the 22-250...one when you pull the trigger and one when it whops a coyote way out in the field.

X2but the bullet seems to have travel about 50 yds. or so to warm up or they are very hard on fur.

Not sure how they do on yotes but I have had good luck with 55 grain blitzkings. Very accurate and destroy woodchucks. Did real well with the 36 grain varmit grenades also.

I’m with Danny, lovin the 55 gr. Nosler ballistic tips. I’m pushing mine with 37.5 grains of H-380. Still comes down to shot placement.

Stay away from “varmint” bullets (v-max, blitzking, varmint grenades, etc).

Back off on the velocity if you reload. Just because you can push them 3800-3900 fps, doesn’t mean you should.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I’ve shot one or two with the 50 gr Nosler ballistic tips over the years. Absolute best balance of coyote anchoring potential and “fur friendliness”.

Close second are the 52 gr. Sierras.
