To equal the same amount of meat from a average deer?

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/15/20 01:50 AM

A lot. Even if you're really aggressive in getting every piece of salvageable meat of the hog. My average chucks are about 6-8 lbs. Occasionally get a 10lber a few times a year doing nuisance work. Think my biggest Chuck was 20.

I'd say that's about my average too Sniper, I should buy a scale and start weighing them.

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/15/20 01:54 AM

5 to 8 pounds is also average for me. not many 12 pounders. Between my wife and I we have taken 150 plus in the last 4 weeks in our jobs.

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/15/20 01:56 AM

So if we said an average of 6lbs, then probably 2 1/2 lbs of meat per, would that be ballparkish?

Dang Jonesie, you two are gettin after'em, nice!

Jonesie, you all are wearing 'em out! This is probably the first time in years that I haven't killed at least 50 by now. I find I'm never able to keep them as it's always so hot and the blowflies are on them instantly

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/15/20 02:43 AM

After some math up in my head lol, I'm thinking 40 groundhogs would equal 1 deer. Does that sound right???

They are easy to process if you are not deboning.

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/15/20 04:40 AM

If you are talking meat only on a 6 # groundhog,I would think 2.5# would be way,optimistic.1.5# would be closer if you are boning the meat.If you are chunking them up,hide, bones and all, that is a different story. If I were grinding them,I would throw in heart, liver and kidneys.

Jeff, smaller groundhogs are better to eat.

I was gonna say 40 lbs of meat from an average deer. 2lbs of meat from the average woodchuck. I'd rather butcher 1 deer than 20 Whistle pigs though. The ones worth skinning always stink. Which reminds me I stuffed 2 woodchucks in a sealed bucket with an airlock on it going on 3 years ago... Aughta be ready for coyotes right about now.

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/15/20 12:25 PM

Thanks Keith. I've been eating groundhogs all my life, I don't mind the big old ones either. The way I cook them, they're all good. Good point about the pig though. I would have to make a makeshift cage of sorts to haul the pig home. Also, I do have one of Jayme's skinners that is set up for my truck hitch.

In this heat, how long would a fella have to get the meat in the fridge? You know I'm slow moving lol.

As long as you can beat the flies you should be fine.

Catch, Look on u tube, dressing a wild hog. They use a big cooler , with a slurry of water and ice, put in a couple of pounds of table salt. The salt lowers the temperature, to just above freezing.. Put your hog ,in it , to transport and cool out. should work on any critter.. old243

Jeff, just rent a trailer from Uhaul for a day to transport the hog in and wash the trailer out good afterwards.

I don't think it's been determined that a woodchuck could chuck wood. grin Another great idea Keith, thanks. Nice pic Sniper!

That must be one small deer.

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/16/20 01:54 PM

My final math, done all up in my head with my giant Yankee brain lol, is this. I figure a good average deer at 130, yielding 60lbs of meat. I figure a groundhog at 6lbs only produces 1 1/2 lbs of meat. So, 40 Ghogs would be a ballpark equivalent to a deer. Does this sound about right?

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/16/20 02:18 PM

You all need to stop shooting those small deer.240 pounds all dressed out.

They're delicious Beav. Nothing but goodness, just a lot of work to get 40 in the freezer.

Re: How many groundhogs would it take - 07/19/20 01:58 PM

I don't know how many it would take to equal a deer, but got one eating out of the feedlot bunks that would make a heck of a carcass. Not sure after the fat cooked off you would have much left, but that thing looks as wide as it is long when we see it bailing out of bunks. laugh

Id rather eat one that dresses out at 120-150 unless 95% of it goes through the grinder first...
