Speed Dip input

Speed Dip input - 07/24/20 07:23 PM

The last batch of Andy Stoe's speed dip I mixed up is not drying as it always has in the past. I only dip my water line traps and they will not loose their tackiness well over a month now! I am mixing as I always have. Plenty of low humidity days so that's not the cause. I am putting the blame on the generic Coleman fuel I picked up as the original Coleman fuel could not be found. I am suspicious the generic is not as well refined as original coleman is. Anyone else experiencing the same issue ?

Mine have always dried sticky. I don't use it any more because when it gets cold it loses its stickiness, but when it clamps against the body of a warm critter, it warms it up, the fur sticks to it and then it hardens a bit and i tear out some fur.

Nope.

When are trappers going to realize there are better dips that actually work with out adding gas.

I got some traps that I'll have to dye or dip soon any suggestions to try. I've never tried any dips.

Are you stirring up the mixture? A lot of dip will thicken on the bottom of the pail if it has set for any amount of time. Make sure mixture is stirred well. The mixture may to be thick if it's not drying. You may need to add a little more fuel to thin it.

F1 would be a better choice you just have to add water.

Good thoughts on the mixing silky- unfortunately it was mixed well. I am pretty well convinced the problem is poor fuel. Positive responses and input is always appreciated and sincerely respected.

I just posted about dipping on here a couple of days ago and did about 1000 traps yesterday. They are all still tacky. I added an extra gallon of Premium gasoline to thin it out even more. Maybe it is the high humidities here or something. Hopefully they finish drying while they are piled inside.

Thanks for joining in and advising of your earlier post 160. My current plan will be a bath in highest octane gas available and see if I can remove or at least dilute the what I have so it will dry.
Best of luck 160

Rob,I have never used anything but coleman, and have never had problems. But this unreal heat and humidity cannot help--dew point is climbing as we type.

Re: Speed Dip input - 07/25/20 02:08 AM

I suspect the dips are very different and doesn't have as much to do with the fuel as the dip itself. Stoes and KBL are they the same? do they vary with the color you choose? does the formulation vary from year to year? etc... lots of variables when you mix in all the different brands of gas and different types of gas.... it's just not worth the risk IMO. Add to that the traps resale value drops when they are speed dipped.

To let you know, I once had a bucket of stoes black mixed with the cheapest gas I could buy (over 10 years ago) it worked perfect for years, just added more dip or more gas as needed and I had a hard slick finish everytime. At some point that bucket got tipped over and leaked out so I thought I'd start over with all new black stoes in a new bucket and real coleman fuel, just to be on the safe side,,, sticky, stinky, messy, gooey traps! Tossed out the dip, bought the Formula 1 from Newt and never looked back.

I think I mixed mine with 1 1/2 to 2 gallons of Crown camp fuel ( coleman knock off) and have been using the same batch on water traps for about 4 years now. I hang them for a day in the barn , then lay them out on a trailer in the sun for a couple days and they are dry and slick to the touch. It's easier to mix it really thin and dip twice if needed than to mix to thick.

I went to diluted latex dip...haven't buried any yet, but it's cheap and easy, and that's what I'm about. May not work, but this will be the year to experiment, cuz prices will most likely be down, so what's at stake?

I've speed dipped for years with Andy Stoe speed dip. Never had a problem as long as you thin it a little and make sure it's stirred well. I do have lower humidity here which probably helps. I just use high octane gas(91) without ethanol.

kyron4 provided an excellent tip. Leave in the sun. I hang them for 3 days in the sun. Then turn them over and lay on a piece of plywood in the sun for another 3 days to dry the top of traps. If it's hot out the first day you dip it won't matter if it rains on them as long as they hung for about 4 hours before the rain. When stored don't enclose them in a bin. Put in milk crates and let them continue to air out till season.

Re: Speed Dip input - 07/25/20 05:28 PM

If you are using it on your water line it will make no difference if they are sticky or not. I have used Stoe's speed dip for decades and have never had an issue. I dip mine on a hot summer day and allow them to dry in the sun for a few hours and then load them into a couple steel trash cans where they stay until season. The smell will not bother a water animal. Having said that I dye and wax all land traps. Speed is the name of the product. It keeps the inside of the springs coated even after multiple catches. Andy Stoe was a great American Patriot. LLL
